I love the ceramics program and the aqua center
Excellent location, nice people, great equipment.
We had checked 3 different Ys and between them we get all we were looking for: pickleball, egym, free weights and classes. We’ll be visiting several on a regular basis.
YMCA East is a warm and welcoming place. Fitness and activity teachers facilitate community and foster positive relationships. This is a great place to learn new skills and to make new friends.
I’ve been a member for years. I haven’t gone in person much since Covid to the gym, where I used to attend four days a week before Covid. I have two married daughters and both of their families are members. I love the swimming opportunities for my two grandsons. Sammy was an awesome teacher and really helped my six-year-old grandson Braden. Now we feel very happy to have Becca because Sammy is leaving for college. My grandson had one lesson with Becca and I met her as well and she was just lovely.
There are plenty of things to choose from to accommodate everyone. Staff is very helpful
The weight machines are not being cleaned, or things that are left on the machines are not being cleaned.
Available machines
It would be nice to have stationary wipes for cleaning equipment instead of the paper towel and spray.
I live on the other side of town and usually go to Northwest. I come to Hal Welsh sometimes for art workshops, or to meet with the Laurie’s Hope group. Any friends or family that ask about the classes or workshops I have done, I always recommend getting involved with the YMCA
The beauty and cleanliness of the place, as well as the staff, are absolutely wonderful; many of my friends recommended joining, and I always see them here.
Cleanliness of the facility is a top priority. The women's shower rooms are sometimes not as well kept up. I would recommend it to anyone, like myself who doesn't mind being around the noise and mess of children--inclusivelness is why I love the Y
Mostly, I'm a fan of this YMCA, and all that they offer. The facilities are nicer than some of the others in the area, and the breadth of programs offered is wonderful for the wide range of ages who visit. My daughter has been in swim lessons with the Y for the past two years, and spent time visiting the pool primarily at the Northwest YMCA for two years before that. We made the switch to Hal Welsh because my daughter has been attending school in the area. Every single interaction I ever had with someone on the pool staff at Northwest was wonderful. I always felt very safe having my daughter in every pool, from the therapy pool to the lazy river. My experience with the teachers and pool staff at Hal Welsh has been underwhelming, and as of this past Tuesday, absolutely unacceptable. A parent had to jump into the pool to pull his child out of the water because they had started slipping under and panicking in water too deep for them, while the lifeguard on duty did nothing. Frankly, at this point, I'm considering the longer drive to go back to a pool I trust.
The women’s locker room is professionally cleaned at all times
Facilities need to be updated. It looks dated.
The staff and facilities are great, and I very much appreciate the e-gym.
Very nice facility, helpful staff, and great atmosphere overall.
The hot tub tiles are losing a significant amount of amount of grout which is floating and settled at the bottom of the tub and was stuck to my skin when I showered after. Inside the shower area closest to the saunas I noticed what appeared to be black mold on the ceiling above the middle shower stall. I did not use any other areas of the building at that time.
The people in the reception area were very helpful.
I like everything about the Hal Welsh East YMCA! It's always clean, the staff is knowledgeable and friendly and the LiveStrong program is helping me get stronger after cancer. I'll continue after the twelve weeks are finished with LiveStrong.
I wish there were even more ops for seniors. How about that front part having a really comfortble chair or two, and some reading lamps or whatnot?COuld there be tea, coffee and Iced tea all the time there (charge a fee if needed; that would be
no big problem!_) I also think of other things. One could be made to feel welcome; some of the Staff do that but not all.
The bingo group or Bridge could be "more outreaching" because tho I know those groups exist, I've been relectant to try to join because I sense they
might prove intimidating. Know that may be "silly" but I feel that somehow, at present.THanks for asking all this!!
Repair lockers in locker rooms, spray for bugs, more info on updating silversneakers
I loved the hot tub
Staff very friendly and helpful
It was great they added space for kids 7-12 not having that made us leave, with it available we came back. It would be better with more options but at least it's something.
Great! Happy to have found the place where i enjoy it all
Place is clean. I never met any people at work at that mean not even the people that go there that’s a good atmosphere there.
The staff is very friendly and helpful. This facility is very clean and strength training equipment is plentiful and well maintained as well as the cardio equipment. Members are respectful and friendly plus they offer many different types of classes from exercise to hobbies as well as art class and other programs.
Love the water aerobics classes -- Monday and Wednesday mornings
Big variation of exercises to do there. Lots of machines/weights and water too. Staff to assist too.
I really like the Y. But the unaddressed issue that continues to linger is the lack of etiquette enforcement by staff. For example, in the eGym which my wife uses, there are continuously people who routinely cut-in as people are going thru their sequential machine workout. She’ll have just a few seconds left on a machine before she moves to the next one in sequence, and someone not following the sequence or someone who just walked into the room plops themselves down on the next machine my wife is supposed to move on to. And there’s no staff watching out for this and stopping this behavior. Secondly, in the main second floor aerobic room (with all the treadmills, and the weight machines towards the back wall) … there is no staff oversight and enforcement of poor cell phone etiquette. Just yesterday I was in the room to work out after spin class, and ended up having to wait a LONG time to use one of the machines … because a young man on the machine would do some leg curls for about 30 seconds, then return to checking emails/texts/web pages or whatever he was doing on his phone for 3-5 minutes. Then he’d do another set for about 30 seconds, then back on his phone for 5 minutes. I was even there once while a young woman was on her phone for about 10 minutes or more, IN SPEAKER PHONE MODE, while on a call that appeared to be a work conference call. Y staff needs to be in the area by these machines, AND enforce cell phone policy. I understand that people may grab their phone to quickly change to a different song for listening to, or check the caller ID if their phone receives a call, but people should not be texting, doing emails, on calls, or working remote while they’re occupying a machine. It’s the machines that people can sit on that are generally where cell phone abuse occurs … and the abusers don’t care about the sign you put on the wall saying not to be on you cell phone while on the equipment. PLEASE help do something about this. The desk where staff for this room hangs out is at the wrong end of the room …. plus you need staff with the courage to step-in and do something about this (I realize this is not easy for many people). Maybe a solution is to switch the room around and put the Nautilus type machines up by the entrance where the staff desk is … AND train the staff to ‘monitor and enforce’ etiquette. Sorry for the rant, but this is a tremendously frustrating issue that is happening regularly.
Great people
Great exercise equipment. Friendly staff.
I was told the therapy pool would be always open.. when I got there it would not be open until 4 .
The staff is friendly and helpful.
staff is professional and friendly and the place is clean
.
I feel that seniors are overlooked at the Y. We are made to adjust and move activities due to no designated senior area
I'm so pleased with my instructor, Terri T. who teaches back to back classes on Monday.
The YMCA is always clean and has friendly staff.
Great therapy pool and staff let you use noodles etc in pool great facilities for kids like parents night out and gym areas are very nice lots of cool things like the room upstairs where you can do a full workout just going on a few machines cool Pilates stretch area with hanging rope pulleys etc great gym and staff thank you to Lifeguards thanks also for opening kids pool and slide more often
I usually go to the Y in Manlius & love it there! Went to the Fayetteville one yesterday, just to use a treadmill, because I was shopping near by. It was very warm! I was sweating like I never have before! Have to use paper towels to clean the equipment! Manlius uses cloths, that they wash & reuse! Less waste!
love the ceramic studio
I have made new friends and have worked out there since it opened.
friendly helpful staff; professional workouts; class leaders are well rehearsed and very competent and accommodating to each person's workout needs
Use less harsher chemicals in the pool. Update locker rooms.
I think the weight lifting equipment is outdated, the weightlifting areas are too small to accommodate the amount of people in there, it doesn’t seem to be kept tidy as well, and honestly by late afternoon the locker room and shower areas are dirty. Seems to me, it would be good to have a lifting area in one big room libectge cardio room. This way a staff member can keep it tidy, clean and more hygienic. Unfortunately members do not wipe down machines or equipment after they use it.
As a parent, it is the best place for your kids to be engaged while you work out or relax in the sauna. In addition, my son used to work there, and it really helped him connect to members of the community and not just little kids but their parents as well. He was a part of the youth basketball games that they offer (youth NBA). Best of all, I believe was his boss and how incredibly flexible and forgiving he was when he was late. Lastly, as a gym goer, I love how nice and fully staffed the gym is and the vast number of programs/activities offered. My favorite is having a gym with a sauna, steam room and a hot tub. The only thing missing is rock climbing. :) Thank you Hal Welsh East Area Family YMCA!
Facilities and staff are excellent. The environment is safe and respectful.
Child watch has been a life saver since my first child. I recommend the y to all my friends with kids.
Facility has many options to keep busy. Facilities generally clean and staff members eager to help you with any questions. The Y is a great community resource.
The Y is a family friendly focused facility that offers more than just physical fitness. There are swimming lessons, art classes, child care and before and after school care. Strong relationships are definitely built at the Y! I highly recommend the facility-
