My kids lost a lot of stuff. There didnt seem to be enough time to ensure the kids collected their stuff properly prior to moving to the next activity. My kids had exposure to a lot of fun activities and games. I expect we will be back next year because its so focused on outdoor activity. I hope the counselors can get more training though. They seemed a bit immature and my kids picked up a few bad habits from them.
1. Counselors could improve communication skills with young campers for bathroom breaks. Anticipatory guidance is really helpful to young children for toileting, including where the bathrooms are located and reminding them to use the bathroom before going to an area where there is limited bathroom accessibility. Routine toileting breaks every 2 hours or so are important the first few days, especially for those campers who are new to the facility. 2. Improved eye contact and communication from counselors/lifeguards would be beneficial to both parents/guardians and campers. Examples we encountered include making eye contact with parents at drop off when the parent has a question or is unsure where to go and assisting with camper handoff. For younger or first time campers, it is helpful to see familiar faces at drop off, so stationing the same staff at drop off for the first few days each session may help the camper feel more relaxed/safe. We also experienced limited recognition/eye contact with our child's counselor during one of the family nights, despite it occurring during a session we participated in. It was very disheartening to see that my usually reserved child was happy to see his counselor in attendance, but unfortunately the staff member continued his conversation with other counselors without acknowledgement/wave/eye contact while inside the pavilion together. The kids really do look up to and value the staff at camp and it would be helpful for the younger staff/counselors to understand their verbal and non-verbal cues are meaningful, even to those campers who staff may not bond with as much or are only there for 1-2 sessions. 3. An update from the camper's direct counselor would be a valuable addition to the program. My children are young and do not communicate much at the end of a long camp day. It would be helpful to know (perhaps twice weekly?) how the campers are doing/what did they seem to enjoy or not participate in so parents/guardians could be aware. This could help families come together over a new activity or spend more time working through a feared one. 4. Sun safety. It would be helpful for staff to anticipate the need to reapply sunblock to children's skin, especially during sunny days or following wet activities, given most sunscreen needs to be applied every 80 minutes. I am not sure if there is a protocol on this, and not sure how many children remember to reapply without it being part of their daily schedule, mine did not despite our daily reminders. Offering to help apply highly visible areas like necks, faces and ears is always appreciated for fair and sensitive skinned campers prone to burning.
Everything filthy, mrsa on the water slides and pushing political and gender agendas on young and impressionable children.
This is our second year of Camp Evergreen and I have found that it really helps our child grow during the summer. We look forward to returning next year!
Lots of activities. Kids are outdoors all day.
This is our 2nd year with Camp Evergreen and we have loved it very much- thank you for such a wonderful experience!
The length of camp days are very helpful for working parents. Many summer camps are only 1/2 days or for a few hours during the day. My kids loved swimming in the pool and the lake, as well as other lake activities. They did seem to become a bit bored with the same day to day activities after a week, but they did enjoy the special events/activities!
Camp Evergreen was a great first time experience for my children! They can't wait to go back next summer and we will be doing more than one session this time around as they were so sad to only be there for one session! We recommend this camp to so many!
Our son Lucas loves Camp Evergreen. The counselors do an amazing job making him feel special, and every day feels like a new adventure. Keep up the amazing work!
Loved it!
Our son loves camp, just finished his 6th summer. However, the normal drop-off and pick-up procedures need to change. I cannot spend 30 minutes or more waiting in line.
Great experience all around for my duaghter.
My daughter experienced Camp Evergreen for the first time this year. She came home exhausted, covered in a film of dirt and grim and SUPER excited to share her day adventures! This was such an amazing 2 weeks!!! Her interactions with counselors and other campers was always positive. Thanks you to all the staff and volunteers for all you do to make camp such a great experience!!!
My 6 yr old daughter loved her two weeks of camp at camp evergreen. She was so sad that she was going to have to wait a whole year to come back!
I reached out by email to a few different people to ask about the YMCA member discount which I never received. I have since canceled my membership because I didn't receive the discount benefits from having it. My daughter liked camp, but was very disappointed that they only went swimming 2-3 times including one time just to take the test.
Unfortunately, several issues made this summer deeply unsatisfactory for our family. First and foremost, there was a serious lack of transparency regarding swimming activities. We were not informed that the lifeguards had lost their certifications, which is a major safety concern and a breach of trust. Additionally, Family Welcome Night did not live up to expectations. It felt unwelcoming and disorganized, with camp counselors who appeared disengaged and uninterested in connecting with families or creating a warm environment. The bus rides were another major issue. They were marked by aggressive behavior among campers, and there seemed to be no effective supervision or control by the adults present. This created an unsafe and chaotic atmosphere that no child should have to endure. Due to these experiences, I will not be sending my children to Camp Evergreen in the future, nor will I be recommending it to other families. I hope this feedback is taken seriously and used to make meaningful improvements for the safety and well-being of future campers.
My son's first time at camp and he loved it! Did session 2 and 3 and was upset he wasn't doing session 4. He is already looking forward to next summer!
The kids had an awesome summer and adored their counselors. Our "coyote" camper (Iris) stayed motivated all summer to maintain the summer camp spirit everywhere she went. We saw a level of positivity and teamwork from her that we've never quite experienced and are so grateful to the staff for the incredible impact they had on her this summer. It was also really wonderful to see our kids bond over their experience at Evergreen with all the stories, friends, activities, various games/challenges and events. Many core memories were made this past summer. Thank you!
My son Levi had a great time! He is not the most social person, but looked forward to camp every day and came home happy. Communication from the camp is great, and I wish I had started both my kids when they were little!
The overall structure of the camp is great and keeps my 6 and 9 year old engaged all day. They have good experiences with all of the camp staff and made friends to varying degrees throughout the summer. Communication from the camp is good and especially appreciated the quick email updates from the nurse when my children visited.
Activities were great my daughter loved it
Counselors at drop off/pick up could be friendlier and more attentive to helping young kids with doors (we use childproof locks so the kids can't open their doors from the interior and doors must be opened from the exterior). Both of these things could help move things along more quickly, though the line is already surprisingly efficient! But establishing trust right away with new campers would be appreciated by their caregivers. Also, my young children lost things almost daily. Despite clearly labeling every single item with their names, many of them never came back to us. Counselors could be much more helpful, especially with the younger kids, but likely with everyone (from the look of the lost and found pile!) in helping them stay organized and checking areas before they leave for items. I sent notes in daily for my children and their counselors as far as things lost from the previous day to look for and was hopeful the counselors could have been a bit more helpful. I even checked the lost and found myself 2-3 times throughout the session and we still had 5 items that were never found, despite having our names in/on them.
It is a great summer camp experience, a traditional summer camp without the kids having to be gone overnight. My daughter absolutely loves being able to swim, meet new friends and the friendly competitions
You did not disappoint, we just live on the other side of town.
Love the staff and all outdoor time.
Love the outside activity and traditions!
The staff! We miss the horses
My kids loved it! I wish there was a little more communication about things like special days, sooner.
My son loved camp Evergreen. He came home covered in dirt, exhausted and with a smile on his face every day. He can't wait for next year!
My daughter loved her session at Camp Evergreen. The staff was very friendly and encouraging. My daughter liked the spirit building activities like the Thunderbird and cheers. She enjoyed swimming, boating, archery, rock wall, and the ropes course. She also liked when they gave awards to kids and adults. Thank you for providing a wonderful experience for her. She is looking forward to next year!
Our daughter likes the camper/counselor bonds, going on hikes, and the camp spirit expressed in singing and other unit activities
My son had an awesome summer, and I really saw him grow a lot more independent and fun loving throughout. Dom and the staff she put together were awesome!
My daughter loved camp.
Everything. Variety of activities. Friendly fun staff.
Each year, my children have THE BEST time at Camp Evergreen. The staff is unbeatable and very inclusive. They are fun, upbeat and happy! My children love the variety of experiences that they can be involved in at camp. They also really enjoy being able to participate in the overnights. Dom has done an incredible job. My children are already talking about going for more than just two sessions next year!
The camp offers a great variety of super fun activities, and my child really enjoyed those parts of the day. Unfortunately, there are some challenges that make it difficult for working parents. The drop-off and pick-up process is extremely inconvenient and often adds an extra 25 minutes to both mornings and evenings, which is frustrating with a busy schedule. Another disappointment is that the camp does not allow friend requests. For many families, summer camp is about kids being able to spend time with their friends, and my son struggled with anxiety because he didn't know anyone in his group for the first couple of sessions. He spent several nights upset and worried about going, which made the experience much harder than it needed to be. While the activities themselves are great, these logistical and social factors really impacted our overall experience.
Great camp, friendly staff, definitely a camp to send your kids to.
Staff
We would like to shout out Brooke, one of the counselors. My kids loved her and couldn't say enough good things about her!
Site, program, activities, staff
This program makes my daughters whole summer amazing. I am jealous I never got to go here as a kid. It makes her be social, learn and play in the outdoors, how to build real, long-lasting friendships with kids from all over CNY. She can't wait to go back each and every year.
My second grader (a fox) attended Camp Evergreen for all 9 weeks. He had a blast with friends and counselors and came home happy, exhausted, and dirty EVERY DAY! I love that Camp Evergreen is a no frills outdoor day camp that promotes values like respect, encourages outdoor exploration, and also allows campers to feel a sense of autonomy throughout the day. Thank you, Camp Evergreen!!
Social interactions for my kids, friendly staff
My daughter loves this camp and looks forward to going every year. The Counselors and CITs are all very passionate about creating positive experiences for the campers by creating a fun and safe environment.
Another excellent summer experience - thank you!
Our twin boys absolutely LOVED camp evergreen. They can not wait to go back. They loved the outdoor adventure, the lake and their counselor Kat!
My son has had a wonderful summer experience and is very much looking forward to returning next year. He even asked one day at pick up that when he turns 16 if he could be a camp counselor for Evergreen, so I think that says a lot about his experience. Thank you for a wonderful summer!
My granddaughter loved it as did her mother 20 years ago. Great stafff and lots of fun.
The staff was helpful and courteous.
My son Bryson Rivera had a wonderful time and was so excited to be there. The camp counselors very nice. Everyone was willing to were a microphone so my child who is hard of hearing could hear better. Love that there are one on one for children who needs them.
