Ymca water activities and swim courses are great
The clean and comfortable facilities.
1 Don't treat member without cell phone as second class members. 2 Share first aid policies and procedures. 3 allow do not share option below.
I’m happy to come at Metuchen YMCA as its very clean facility. Staff is very warm welcoming.
Love the Y, but the membership is a bit expensive.
Why doesn’t pool open at 5.30 am on weekdays like rest of facility? Showers in Men’s Adult locker rooms need to be updated.
Friendly, local and something for everyone
The wait for free weights and machines are unnecessarily long due to people doom scrolling on phones making their rest time longer
The staff is friendly and helpful. The equipment for weight training and cardio exercises is ample, well-maintained and updated. The overall facility is clean. A very nice feature is the steam room.
All age groups are welcomed and no one is made to feel they are in competition with others unlike other gyms.
Weightroom:
1. There used to be 2 EZ curling bars. One disappeared during the pandemic and was never replaced when the Y reopened. There is demand for this bar and the cost should be relatively small compared to the other equipment.
2. The artificial floor for deadlifts needs to be removed. It has constricted the space for the benches as well as movement between the equipment. Since the rubber mats were reinforced, a deadlift floor is no longer needed. This floor serves no useful purpose and makes movement in the gym inefficient.
Men's locker room:
1. Shampoo/soap dispensers in the showers are never refilled in a timely manner. Housekeeping should check this every time they are cleaning.
2. The wall/hand dryer which was removed from the sink area during the last renovation should be replaced. This is also a small expense and would likely be less costly than paper towels which are usually left all over the floor.
Cost:
There was a time when membership dues were manageable. Dues have skyrocketed over recent years, but there's been no improvements in maintenance, and repair/replacement of equipment are way too slow. This was acceptable when dues were low, but now these membership dues are as high as other gyms that have better maintenance and equipment. These improvements need to be made for my continued membership.
I live in Metuchen and it’s an awesome town and I
Later hours to 10pm.
The staff is very friendly and helpful at the front desk. It's like they know everyone! I used to swim in the mornings and the lifeguards were attentive.
I wish the staff would speak to people who is amply do not clean the machines when they are done. This has always been my major complaint with the Y. Love most of the staff, great place to work out. But at times it is just filthy. People sweat all over the machines and simply go on to the next. I know it is hard, but staff should be taught how to gently confront people and remind them to clean the machines.
Lastly, I resent the fee for using a credit card for monthly payment. I've donated thousands of dollars over the years and the little $2 charge for using a credit card is frankly insulting. It should at least be waved for people who routinely donate to you as we have for decades. Again, not the money, simply a lack of recognition for past and present giving.
My only disappointment is the lack of cleanliness in the men’s locker room. The odor isn’t pleasant and more time then not the paper towels are empty.
Been a member for many years excellent exercise equipment and inside swimming pool and excellent employees
Facility needs updating. Locker rooms are old and often not maintained. Staff is great!
The swimming instructors are fantastic teachers
Exceptional client care starting at the front desk, extended to the weight room area, amazing staff.
We really like the YMCA. I think it is a great value for what it offers, and as a family we utilize the gym, pool and participate in the swim team. The facilities are obviously old, and that creates issues sometimes with the locker room or pool closures. It is hard to say 10 out of 10 with those challenges.
Rotate instructors for classes such as Zumba
Would be nice if there was air conditioning in the gym.
As a swimmer, it’s the facility’s limitations. Only 4 lanes to swim in and limited hours. Too many programs battling for pool space. This town deserves a pool facility like RBAY Y. The aerobic classes are top notch and also need more room. Someone needs to win the lottery!
Excellent classes. Caring members.
Pickleball courts, gym, and very friendly staff, most importantly, and very clean restrooms
Staff and members are friendly.
I'm a simple man with simple needs. The YMCA has all the equipment I need to feel like I'm getting a good workout. And I am enjoying the beginner's pickleball class on Friday mornings.
HOWEVER, there seem to be a lot of people using the YMCA facilities that are angry as **** about how wrong the schedule is on the website versus the actual schedule on paper. People don't like getting kicked out of the gym a half hour before they thought they were going to be. And one woman missed half of the first pickleball class because the woman at the front desk told her it started at 9:30 when it was really 9:00. And that's because the woman at the front desk checked the WEBSITE instead of the PAPER schedule that she should have had in front of her!
Heated pool classes Should have cardio drumming classes & kickboxing for seniors
The Metuchen Y has programs I like and use like pickleball, stretch class, & machines that are recommended for my shoulder & knee. Those at the front desk offer friendly greetings when I arrive & leave. The foodstuffs offered are greatly appreciated.
nice place and good people
Enhanced Fitness Class
I would like earlier options for swimming and group classes.
What I appreciate most about the Metuchen YMCA is the individual, gender-neutral locker rooms. As a non-binary person, not knowing there is a safe place for me to change often keeps me from going to the gym. And knowing I can go straight there from work is such a blessing
Friendly staff and the classes upstairs are very good.
Facilities and rec activities.
1)Change door lock for the family/all-gender bathroom closer to women's family locker room. I observed an individual somehow opening a closed door and another individual inside being alarmed – 2)alternatively: put a sign so people are more mindful/respectful of a closed door. I would be alarmed too if someone opened the door and even if they had knocked, it's likely difficult to hear. 3)Offer more budget-friendly tier membership and perhaps loyalty program. 4)Is there any possibility of bringing back towels? or offering a swimsuit spin dryer?
very nice staff, clean rooms and conviently located
The lack of gym etiquette from the kids is completely out of control. They constantly gather in large groups around equipment, messing around instead of actually using it, making it frustrating for anyone trying to get a workout in. Even worse, they disappear into the bathrooms for extended periods—you can literally hear them taking selfies and scrolling on their phones instead of being on the floor. When they are on the floor, they sit on equipment scrolling on their phones for long stretches between sets, tying up machines and killing any kind of flow for others.
The bathroom situation is just as bad. People are frequently not flushing, and there are often issues with urine left on toilet seats. It’s basic hygiene and respect, and it shouldn’t be this much of a problem.
What’s just as concerning is the lack of supervision. While employees like Dan and Bill are excellent and make coming here a genuinely positive experience, some of the newer staff are doing the exact opposite. They sit at the desk in the weight room glued to their phones, ignoring the behavior happening right in front of them. It sends a clear message that anything goes.
At this point, something needs to change. Maybe the gym should require some kind of basic etiquette orientation before allowing kids onto the floor. Or better yet, start holding parents and guardians accountable—because right now there are zero consequences, and it shows.
I enjoy the variety of fitness classes and programs.
Classes
Convenient, clean, friendly staff, welcoming.
In addition to gym, swim, and various class offerings and programs, the Y provides an instant community of warm, caring, and supportive people that make you feel special and want to pay it forward
The pervasive amiability between visitors and personnel.
It's convenient and the people are friendly
The staff is very friendly and I have never had any issues with either staff or the members. The only reason I did not give it a 10,
is that the mens locker room could be a bit cleaner and the sauna should be working. Other that that, it's all good!
Great classes! Friendly people!
Upgrades required to mens locker rooms - Sauna not functioning, no Swimsuit Water Extractor.
I enjoy the laid back atmosphere of the Y's gym facility.
The pool is always filled with lessons. Need to devote more open swim hours.
The high quality programming offered and the convenience of having access so close to home. I also appreciate the dedication of the knowledge and dedication of staff such as Doreen, EJ, Luan and Bill.,
