Havent been to the Somerville YMCA is five months, not sure why you emailed me a survey
The director of aquatics lied frequently after not communicating efficiently and clearly. She seemed happy to frustrate me and vindictive. I would never want anyone to come in contact with her. Behnoosh Shebastari is her name and I feel badly for anyone she is in contact with.
My son obtained his lifeguarding certification at the YMCA in Somerville. He had a fantastic time and we were quite pleased with the program. I, personally, learned how to swim in the same pool many years ago.

Our children have had a great experience learning to swim at the Somerville Y! Millie is patient and gentle with the preschool/kindergarten aged students while driving improved stoke skills with the kids.
Coach Mary is an amazing instructor! She is such a positive force who provides encouragement and skill improvement. Our child's stroke skills have improved so much during her class. More importantly, she has helped our child enjoy swimming again.
Yes, I'd definitely recommend (and have!) to friends and family. I gave an 8 instead of 9 or 10 because we've had a wide range of instructors from GREAT to pretty terrible. We've had to be keyed into the instruction and have switched mid-session to find the right fit. The teachers we've moved from have not paid attention (like literally not watched the children swim) and/or have lacked giving any instruction. They've just told the kids to swim back and forth and that's it.
But, we've also had wonderful and engaged instructors and our kids have loved and progressed in these classes.
It’s been great
Classes are not convenient, nor are there enough to choose from.
Class size over 2 or 3 perhaps another adult instructor would be good to have to help out teachinng. My class had 5 of us so the instructor had to adjust her attention annd help a lot
During private swim instruction.. 2 lanes should be given to swimmers for instruction. Very noisy during school age meets.
Very good lifeguard certification course
The temperature of the water is nice and warm, and I like there were back-to-back classes Mon through Thursday. The instructors for all sessions Monday - Friday were great!
Good teachers and small class sizes make the program worth the money.
Waiting on response sent regarding Wednesday 4:30pm class. Would have been a 9 before this class, which rated a 1 or 2 and brought the score down.
The class was held at the Bridgewater facility. The teacher, Peter, was excellent. He kept the material light but maintained an attention to detail. He was patient with those of us who were struggling with the material. He clearly likes his job and it showed in how he presented the class.
I do not feel like the swim instructor for the preschool class is able to teach all of them in a class setting. Either there needs to be only about two kids with one instructor or more instructors in the class. I find that my child sits on the side of the pool being mainly supervised by the lifeguard for at least 75% of the class while the instructor does individual training with each child. For a class that is only 30 minutes, my child sitting on the side of the pool 75% of the time doesn't really feel like she's getting much out of it.
While we have generally had a great experience with the instructors, I've been very disappointed that a life guard isn't more present during the lessons. The instructor is busy with each child, and while the others are awaiting their turn, there should be someone keeping an eye on them. The lifeguards are often on the opposite side of the pool, talking to each other, and not looking at the kids in the pool that don't know how to swim.
The class was crowded with 8 kids for one instructor
one of the swim instructors is very mean and harsh... the guy in the wheelchair
Very structured program, very patient instructors and great facility!
the aquatic staff were super helpful!!!
Number of options and quality of the trainers are impressive. Only thing I don't like is how we had to walk through the gym to the pool, also inside the pool area feels suffocating
My daughter was very happy with her experience
My daughters name fell if swim program while the employee tried to move her up to stage 3. I now have a payment issue where Y is saying I need to pay but I already paid for it. The issue is taking time to resolve. Also I do not like that I do not know who the instructor is for swim program so that I can try to keep consistency for my kids. It should not be that hard to have this info available when all other swim schools are proving this info easily.

Very good experience, coach is very good and the administration team is very helpful and friendly
It was well organized and easy sign up. All of the staff was extremely nice and accommodating. Pete the instructor was the absolute best. He was kind and patient and a great instructor.
very friendly
Safe and secure family changing room.
Lifeguards repeatedly were not present or attentive during young child swim lessons. During one session, a child jumped/fell into the pool while the instructor was working with another child. A lifeguard was not present at that end of the pool. We brought this to attention of the staff but we continued to notice issues over the weeks of the lessons.
Facility is not maintained well. The changing rooms are equipments are rusted
I am satisfied by the instructor, she is very experienced and good at handling the beginners. Pool is nice and well maintained. I am enjoying the learning process.
Great place for kids swim
Very bad experience in Swim coaching to kids
The instructor is extremely patient, warm and knowledgeable. She clearly explained techniques, tailored lessons to my individual needs, and created a fun, supportive learning environment. I saw remarkable progress in my swimming skills within a short period.
I have taken private and group classes beginning February 14 2024. My instructors are Jean and Catherine. Special kudos to them. They are very patient . I can finally swim across the pool.
My daughter loved her level 3 class! Samantha was an excellent instructor, and we wish she taught level 4.
Great location
Poor management. They will not communicate for any changes in the class. Because of this we missed 3 classes. It is just waste of time and money. I will be canceling my membership.
Our instructor at the Somerville YMCA is patient, kind, and engaging to name a few things. Our daughter is having a delightful experience.
There are too many kids per class.
Thr aquatics director doesn't respond to any of my emails or voicemail
The instructor is amazing and the pool maintenance is great. My daughter found her confidence back by starting her classes at Somerville ymca.
More classes
Learning experience is great!!
It would be nice to see more than one instructor for the earlier groups so that more teaching can be done. I also noticed that there doesn't seem to be much progress with the students to take them to the next level. Instructor seems nice but needs to be more assertive.
When I signed up for the YMCA In Union/Roselle Park years ago. Almost all lanes were available. During my last lesson, only 1 lane was available and it was too crowded for 6 to 7 ppl. Also, the structure of the class was very different as there were multiple levels for beginners. Levels 1 to 3. That way everyone was relatively the same and all were doing the same things. I love the main instructor, and she's tried hard, but overall the structure and the lanes aren't there to be as beneficial as desired.
The group classes are great
Everyone is friendly and helpful. The pool is nice and warm. My daughter is improving on her mechanics and strength. The children's locker rooms could use an update, especially the showers.
I wasn't told in advance how much colder the Bridgewater pool is (and inappropriate for preschool and early elementary school children) compared to the Somerville pool. I tried to get help to register my younger child but never got a call back or an email that actually solved the issue.
