So far, I would rate my experience a 7 out of 10. Overall the environment has been good, but there has been some miscommunication regarding the Girls Time to Play program. I hope communication improves moving forward because I believe the program has great potential.
It really would depend on what sports program. We really did enjoy basketball and Coach Fred. He taught the kids a lot of skills, he had a lot of patience working with little ones and he also kept him on task. Great mix of discipline and patience. My little one really enjoyed him. Can you make sure the kids learn skills, but also had time to demonstrate skills through drills and games.
We also did camp with my older son last year, we had not so great of experience. The kids would go to a park each morning as their routine, but they were told they could not use the equipment because someone could get hurt. Additionally, he felt as if they were always told to be quiet and not play around. However, it’s was a fun camp, my son is definitely one who will respect authority and listen to counselors or anyone in charge. He begged me not to go back to camp, and we stopped going midway.
We also did gymnastics with my older son. He enjoyed the general classes, but I felt like it wasn’t very organized. We never got to see students for learning, except for just watching the practices. Not a bad experience but not great.
Scheduling and communication Classes for young girls Starting on time
How great Nicole Josey & Coach Fred are!
Tryouts and organization was a little disorganized but the coaches were great and my daughter had a great experience
My son played on the 10U YMCA Ducks travel basketball for first time this winter and it was a great experience for him. I found Coach Juwan Sandiford to be a great coach for the boys; always with positive encouragement while also teaching strong fundamentals of the game in an ordered and efficient practice environment.
My son loves kinderducks! Coach Fred rocks and his patience is next level. It's amazing to see the progress the kids have made over the last few months.
La atención. La responsabilidad. La dedicación. Que demuestran por nuestros niños. Me ha gustado. Muchos. Me alegra. Que sigan. Así. Muy importante. Para el futuro y el desarrollo de los niños. Gracias
Though never visited the YMCA at south orange mountain. My sons experience playing for their 14u division basketball team was a great experience. Coach Nicholas is the best
The soccer coach was so nice! We saw him walking home and he said what a great job Greylan is doing and my son really enjoys the class!
Great selection of programming for all age groups!
My son plays basketball, coach Fred's Kinderducks class. A 10/10 experience. Coach cares about the kids, helps them learn the game, and maintain the perfect balance of keeping them focused and letting them have fun.
How they teach and integrate players of all experience levels and encourage
My daughter loves her gymnastics class
I wasn't sure how my almost-3-year-old was going to handle being picked up from the ECLC for Soccer class, but I'm SO glad I signed him up. He looks forward to class every single week (I often use it to get him out the house quicker!) and he can't wait to share with us what he did in class that day. Even with a range of ages, Coach Fred and Keturah are amazing and are providing a foundation for my sporty kid to continue past preschool.
The coach spends a lot of individual time with kids who need it most which is wonderful, but the kids end up waiting in line a lot and those with the most ability get very little attention. When my son finally gets the coach's attention, it's comes in the form of negative criticism. The kids aren't at an age where they can control themselves fully so it's understandable that the coach could get frustrated, but my son leaves feeling hurt rather than motivated to do better. It would help to have an additional coach for the kids who are more advanced. This is a tough job for just one person!
My daughter is in the gymnastics Saturday mornings and I wish there was a bit more instruction to teach her. She is shown what to do at the beginning (ie tumbling or cartwheel, but I see on the very next one she is doing it wrong again. It would be nice for her to be shown a few times. I know this is hard considering the amount of instructors and kids.
This feedback is for Ducks Basketball only. We really just aren't a fan of how the program is run. There seem to be too many kids for the size of the court, younger siblings running around interrupting play, disorganized clinic structure.
The coaches are excellent they really care about there students!
We really love the skills and coaching our son John receives at basketball. He's learned so much and I can see his confidence soar in so many aspects of life even beyond the court.
instructors were so kind -- and got the kids to play a proper match! not easy to do across age groups.
Makes sports accessible with great coaches and programs.
Coach Ariel has done an amazing g job at Wednesday basketball building community and confidence while building basketball skills. Both my kiddos are very happy with the gymnastics programming and offerings. Lena is awesome— super involved, responsive, and creates a warm and safe environment.
My daughter has had a wonderful experience doing gymnastics classes and on the gymnastics team. We love Lena and Kellyn.
Based on YMCA mission and values, I don't think South Mountain ymca is living up to It's own standards. In the programs there seems to be special attention and benefits given to some while others are excluded. So I don't think i can recommend to someone with confidence given the inconsistencies between the YMCA values and the way it functions.
This is my first year signing my son up for the sport group activities and it's one of the best decisions I have made. The instructors are amazing and engage with the children on levels they understand. Helping to expand on character and confidence!
I paid for soccer and while the coaches were sweet. The age requirement needs to change. The range it TOO wide. All toddler parent dropped out. Younger children need attention. It just seems as if the this ymca is just not the same. There is no care for younger children. Even the arts program. My daughter felt so out of place. So again, I paid for two activities that both my children could not do.
We have two students taking kinderducks basketball and Tiny Tigers Karate. The kinderducks basketball has been great overall, the coaches do a good job of keeping each kid engaged, but our daughter was stung by a bee inside the gym, which seems to be a recurring, unresolved issue. The reason for the lower score is because of the Tiny Tigers program. The age range listed is 4-8 but I do think it would be better suited for 4-5 or 4-6. Our son is 8 and is always bored and never wants to come to class. There have been a lot of changes and lack of clear communication on class schedule, expectations, what to expect next, etc. For example, we were told there would be evaluations the next class, so prepared our son for that mentally, and then there were not. There were random surprise visitors from another facility, which was great, but again, would have been nice to know going into class what to expect. We were recently told two classes would be combining and there would be some other older kids, but we have yet to see that happen. We have taken other karate classes in the past and the content and format was much different. Our son is not challenged in the ways we'd expected and honestly we are at the point where we will soon be connecting directly with the program leadership to discuss options for leaving the program.
The dedicated coaches. They're really patient and caring towards the player and always easy to talk with
They are amazing and they're so professional
not much engaging to the kids. Wide range of ages.
The counselors are great with the kids and keep them engaged! My daughter loves the instructors and the skateboarding class.
More hands-on instruction would be helpful. It would also be better if teachers could demonstrate the skills they are working on, rather than simply describe them.
There is always a friendly and nurturing atmosphere during a YMCA-Youth Sports Experience.
My daughter loves the gymnastics program
We love the Y. Basketball programs are growing, gymnastics is amazing!
Full school year sign up with option to cancel with a month's notice. Coach Fred is great with the kids and teaches both basketball and discipline.
Amazing staff!!!
