i come for the classes and must say was disappointed when you no longer offered Stephanie's Barre class.
Parking
it helped in transforming my body.displine and consistency !!
The Y offers a central location. Parking is an issue; locker room renovation is necessary. A family Y program would increase membership
Well I got asked by a man in the weight room to help him with his inner thighs which as a woman was interpreted as sexual harassment.
While I understand it is for safety, the fact that there are keyed women’s only spaces that are seemingly very much needed is not great.
The entire facility is very run down despite the staffs very hard work at keeping it clean.
I love the YMCA downtown most amazing staff! They are helpful and go out of their way to provide great service.
It’s not safe. There’s no supervision in locker room, especially on the weekends. Even fertile assault from people loitering at the back door and smoking cigarettes right under the sign that says, No Smoking. The rules aren’t enforced and staff members don’t even know the rules. They literally people that work for you literally don’t know, but they’re not supposed to use their cell phones in the locker room. People literally don’t think it’s wrong to play their music as loud as they want without headphones in the locker room. Finally, the roaches are just too big and not always dead.
There is a homeless person camped out on the couch in SYAC the
The early morning classes are great and the staff at the desk are really friendly. My hesitance in recommending the downtown Y is specific to the cleanliness and the heating/cooling, particularly in the ladies locker room.
People are down to earth
The pool
Massive water leak in ceiling in woman’s workout room. Ceiling looks as though it is caving in as a result. Major hazard. Will not return to that location.
It is my understanding that we have a new member in SYAC, and he says he is homeless. Enough said!
There's nothing dissapointing, the facility is stuck in 1962 & it has to be updated to equal other metro Y's......
Convenient location, friendly staff, class options
The staff there is amazing. Very welcoming and friendly.
The building is a dungeon. No bosu balls in weight rooms, usually only 1 ab ball that needs air.
This place is a **** hole. I never come to this one because nothing positive ever comes from here. Left my earphone case on the bench upstairs and sure enough it got stolen. No headphones were in it thankfully.
The staff is caring and friendly, the pool is great
Parking is always the issue. When I can, I only come after 1630 hrs
The overall experience is great. It can be more cleaner.
It isn't the safest place for me to take my clients and I wasn't happy that there was no space my client and I could change and go into the pool together from the changing area that's not safe for clients you know as I am a mentor and can not be separated from my clients
If possible, it would be ideal for the field trips to be closer to Marcellus, or at least within Onondaga County. Perhaps Clark Reservation State Park? Oneida Shores Beach? We disliked such long bus trips and feeling like the kids were very far away if something were to happen (like an unexpected injury or illness, it would've been hard to pick them up in Rome and other further locals).
Run down equipment, broken AC in women's locker room for months with no indication of plan to repair, equipment cleaner often empty, smells like cigarettes and weed walking into the facility.
I enjoy the women only gym, parking is difficult to access the facility is my biggest issue.
Basketball courts are not in good shape slippery compared to hal welsh and just a better experience at other local ymcas
It’s an old building. I love the pool and sauna. If you’re coming in to use some of the other facilities not sure what shape they are in. Parking has always been a challenge with no designated parking lot.
- The men's locker room is extremely outdated (i.e., the carpeting likely has mold from how old and stained it it).
- Can the large dead space in the men's locker room be utilized for more lockers or benches.
- Can the entrance way to the men's locker be reconfigured (i.e. remove the old equipment cage)?
- The racquet ball courts could use some fresh paint and a decent amount of lights replaced.
- The free weights in the upstairs/Track gym are mismatched and could easily be replaced with a standard set.
- Can the mini track above the small basketball court be reopened?
- The configuration of the building is quite discombobulating.
- I get that there is senior housing and additional house above the YMCA gyms, but it kind of concerning that some residences sit right outside the gym entrances and smoke, which is counterintuitive for those members who just want to come to a clean gym for a workout, but have to walk through that smoke.

Very clean. The ladies locker room is nice. Very secure. Pool is nice. I enjoy swimming laps when I go to the downtown Y.
Unfortunately the men's locker room is in desperate need of cleaning and a carpet replacement. Daily maintenance is subpar. The pool scheduling is very unreliable often due to unavailability of lifeguards. The incidence of surly, aggressive types in the weight room seems to have increase along with the tendency to leave plates, dumbbells and other equipment scattered throughout the room. Front desk attendants, while typically courteous and friendly, are usually uninformed and uninterested in the status of things, e.g. pool closures.
Feels unsafe
I’m glad I got this email because I was going to call. My Sat morning visit was a fiasco. The attendant was very nice and tried her best to help but had no info on schedules, directions to studio 1, or any help when it came to the body balance class. My husband loves the pool and goes several times a week but even as we wondered deserted corridors and empty gyms, we still could not locate studio 1. The signage was poor. A Third trip up a different set of stairs in the opposite direction we were initially sent, and an additional look off the “ main” gym we saw a dark stairwell. At the top was a locked studio 1. I left my husband there and picked him up after. I did check schedules but if it was cancelled even the attendant was unaware. The state of that facility is sad. It should be the flagship. All the nice Y’s are in the suburbs.
The locker room is in bad shape with most lockers not working right. The basketballs look like they have not been wiped off daily. And a friend had stuff taken from his bag, although that was a very unusual incident there.
Lot of work out options nice basketball court and boxing heavy bag is amazing only gym I seen one so far
I love going to the downtown Y. I like that it is a low-key gym. I like the location. I like saying hello to the residents and employees of the Y. The only thing I don't like is the large amount of unsheltered people who populate many of the surrounding building entrances and Columbus Circle. I wish there were more resources, alternatives for them, and I think that it keeps some people from wanting to go to that particular Y.
Steam room needs upgrade. The buildings old but the syac is kept clean. I was originally a member 4-6th grade then again in high school.
The from desk staff isn't very friendly.
No
Women's area has old equipment, unkempt, not well maintained, not well cleaned, often not having cleaning solution. Why was equipment from Women's gym near pharmacy not given to Women's area downtown site?
Friendly staff
The pool is great. I appreciate having somewhere to swim when the Fayetteville Y is shut down. Sadly, the construction and parking fees keep me from coming more often. The showers are great too!
I understand the reason for all the locked doors, but it's pretty inconvenient for a member. Also, some front desk staff are nicer than others. Fairly good facility otherwise if you live downtown.
Great people (staff and members), all the equipment you need and the best pool in CNY.
The ladies locker room is not kept clean. Multiple
I like the classes. The staff is friendly, competent and helpful.
SYAC membership remains impressive, but not how I remember it 25 years ago unfortunately.
I wish the women’s weight room had heavier weights. I do progressive overload and would love a weight rack like the one in the men’s room - also, more benches please.
We recently were kicked out of the room we used for yoga upstairs to the room downstairs. The room downstairs is horrible for yoga as the sound bounces off the wall and you cannot hear anything when you are laying on the floor. Wish we could have the room upstairs back as it was perfect for yoga
The pool. I swim laps.
Good location despite lack of parking and excellent instructors and equipment.
