Sitting area and concrete should be cleaned better and more often
Jasmin and her aquatics team are amazing, caring, super friendly and do such an wonderful job. My granddaughter just loves going to her swim lessons and she is doing so well.
About half of our swim lessons in the last session started 7-10 minutes late. With having 4 in a group and already only getting about 10 minutes of 1:1 time with the instructor if they got in the water on time, lessening that by a quarter of the time shortens my child's (and everyone else's) ability to learn more about water safety. If a student in the group shows up late, that's on them. The whole group shouldn't have to wait.
This was our first experience with our almost 2 year old. The instructors were fantastic, facility fantastic....we loved it...especially our child. We will continue classes as our schedule allows.
It would be nice to get a free time after class to swim and explore around the pool.
small groups
There are never enough openings, they are full with members before registration even opens to non-members. Would be amazing if more sessions could be added so there was a chance! I am going to have to sign my child up elsewhere, even though my first choice would be the Y.
The instructors are very friendly and helpful.
My 5 year old is in a level 3 class and most weeks, they spend half of the lesson standing in a little fenced in area rather than swimming. The goals for his age-group are great, but how are they going to achieve them if they hardly practice swimming?
So many things! Especially the quality for the cost. It's a beautiful space and the staff is always kind.
On multiple occasions, the schedule posted on the website was incorrect. We showed up with our 3 year old to swim and were told the pool was closed for high school swim practice or a meet. The website needs to be 100% updated and correct -- using Facebook or printed flyers is not acceptable. Furthermore, when attempting to enroll our child in swim lessons at the Gretna YMCA, we were disappointed to see there was only 1 sessions of 5 kids for his age/level. This seems insufficient considering the amount of families in Gretna and the popularity of this YMCA. When I signed in (at 4:50 a.m.) to register, the website gave me an error when I logged in. By the time I was able to sign in, the 5 spots had been taken. I have sent 2 emails to the coordinator (Jasmin Samano) and never received a response. We ended up signing up for swim lessons at a different location. Overall, the pool itself is wonderful. The staff and lifeguards are friendly and facilities are clean. I'm just disappointed in the website/communication and the lack of offerings for swim lessons for an area with so many families.
Swim lessons
Good options, great outdoor pool for summer
Free swim lesson day, discount membership fee
Not telling the parents to sit up in the bleacher. If we have younger children we would like to be closer to them if they need us
I like the personal attention that my children receive. The staff is very friendly and welcoming and it is very evident that safety is importantly.
Very organized Extremely impressed with swim instructor
My girls really enjoyed swim lessons and the instructors did great connecting and teaching them.
More designated lap swim time and lap swim lanes throughout the week. Would be nice to have 8 lanes at a time at some points.
My instructor, Cara, was amazing, patient, and caring. She was really invested in teaching and when one method didn't work she tried other methods. Her tactics felt personalized for me during each class. It wasn't a one size fits all approach.
Our son was very scared of the pool and is now thriving swimming
Trying to reach anyone with questions about swimming sessions is impossible.
Instructors were great with my kiddo. Fun and the ratio to instructor to kid made me feel safe. Safe guards were very in tuned with watching the kids carefully and not distracted at all.
My daughter is in the adult-tot class. I just feel like the instructors of the class could do a better job of conducting it more like a class and actually demonstrating the skills they are trying to teach. They just kinda assume we know what to do and don't do a great job of coming around to each kid to ensure they are mastering the skills. They kinda hang off to the side and don't interact with the parents and students even if they see us doing it wrong. This is my daughter's second time taking it because she's still under 3. I've had 2 other children in this class as well so I am familiar with the activities and skills they teach but I mostly writing this for the 1st time parents where this is their first taste of swimming lessons at Gretna Y. I have had very good/involved instructors in the past, I'm not sure if they are just young and don't feel comfortable teaching adults. I'm not sure but I wanted to let you know my experience this year.
Every thing is perfect in Gretna Crossing. I love a trainer
You don't have summer programs and daycare for kids
there needs to be stronger encouragement to push the kids. My child came from a private swim school and was pushed more there which helped advance his skill and confidence. I'd like to see more of that at the Y lessons.
I really only use the pool, but I like that it is clean, well-staffed with lovely people, and has many approachable activities.
The instructors are fantastic. BEST in the area. Both my kids excelled in your program!
They are the best!!!!! Best instructors, best staff. They really pay attention to the kids progress to make sure they kids are in the right level.
The director was so sweet and caring with my kids!
Small classes and good instructors!
I love the E-Gym and the swim lessons (when you can get in!)
The pool is cold for little ones. Also 5am registration for o be able to get in is challenging.
I love the small group with Austyn!
I think the lessons are ok for families just looking to get their kids used to water at the lower levels (1-3). However, levels 4-6 need a lot of work. I think there are two main issues. First, I believe there are a lot of kids being passed that have not met the criteria to move up a level. For example, my daughter just did level 6 and there were two kids in her class that could not swim freestyle at all. Didn't know the technique and couldn't even make it a 25 without stopping. To pass level 5, they are supposed to be able to swim a 50 freestyle correctly. Second, I think the instructors are struggling to teach lessons in a manner that helps kids learn. I see minimal teaching/showing them the technique, having them practice, giving feedback when they aren't doing the skill as shown, then re-practicing the skill. I don't know if its a lack of training and/or they have the training, but just aren't capable of carrying out a lesson how they are trained.
Easy check in process and appreciate someone inside the pool area to help guide us where to go & who our sons instructor was.
Did great
Very organized and courteous staff.
Small class size. Time slot options. Good instruction to make stronger swimmers! Very happy with our classes. My daughter really enjoyed the classes. She did say the water is always really cold though.
I like everything! For swim lessons - love the 1:1 attention. The groups are small and manageable for the age group. We have watched our kiddo move thru skills and get better!! For youth sports - love the family feel. Love the path they say at the beginning. Just feel like we are in the right place with our Kindergartner as he doesn't have the skills to be on an expensive "club" team. And the cost is affordable at the YMCA!! Thanks for all you do for the community!
Small class sizes, friendly instructors
The instructors are reassuring and attentive. They meet you where you are, help you get farther and more comfortable, but don't push you farther than you feel safe. I've taken lessons before this and these classes are amazing by comparison
The teacher was great!
Need aquatic programs during the week days after school for elementary school kids, as it used to be in the past.
My son is enjoying his time in the aquatics program. He is very proud of his accomplishments. My son is often anxious about trying new things and the staff have made him feel very comfortable.
Swimming lessons has taught me how to swim as an adult. I even signed up for the 100 mile swim club!
Would love to see more offerings for swim lessons at levels of high demand. It seems unreasonable that you cannot register for certain levels of swim lessons if you aren't online to do so at 5:00am. Please offer more sessions when possible.
The communication about my children's progress is wonderful and their skills have improved so much. They LOVE going to swimming lessons at the Y
There was hardly any actual interaction from instructors- they just told the parents to have the kids blow bubbles for example, but then it was on the parents to actually do everything with the kids. Also the pool started off fine temperature wise but now is SO cold my toddler does not even want to get in it and is asking to go home throughout the lesson. Frankly I don't want to get in it either!
