Great staff, great organization to all
Love YMCA sports!
Easy process and great experience for the kids.
The coach is great. A little confusion on field locations but the employee there was very nice.
The opportunity to play and appreciate parents ta stepping forward. I am 65 and would love to coach but my daughters say I should just be a gma
This was very unorganized and the parents that signed their kids up were not involved, didn't respond to communication, and only showed up sporadically. I also only had 7 kids on a 5 person team where 2/3 games so far we only had 4 kids. Other teams had 10+ kids on a team.
Scheduling conflicts. I still don't receive any emails regarding schedule and because of that my child missed the picture day. Practices were missed the first week and times were absolutely absurd for 1st graders…scheduled until 9pm on a school night.
My only request is to add 'days preferred for practic' when we sign kids up. Ie - which nights of the week work best for practice. Kids are so busy with activities and there's some nights that just won't work. It'd be nice for the coaches to pick their night of practice and then the kids can be placed into the teams accordingly rather than having to shuffle around after the fact a week before the first practice. I think this use to be on the sign up forms, but I can't recall. That's my only request everything else is great.
Have a restroom outside for families to access during games or allow families to use side door to exit after using indoor restroom
Sam does a great job!
It's so hard to get coaches for flag football at the gretna ymca. We never had issues with the armbrust one and the coaches were fantastic there. Yes I'm fully aware it's volunteer but it seems Millard cared more about the coaches they got. It just seems to not be mature enough yet.
Not have tball played on an open field, especially after playing on the tball field first. Kids don't really learn the game the best way. It's not the same experience. That has been pretty disappointing, we play the majority of our tball games on an open grass field. Pretty sad with the amount of facilities Gretna now has.
The various days and times
The price seems a bit high for the amount of games/dates. More helmets and balls should be provided imo. Each of my kids teams had one helmet to share between both teams as well as maybe one or two balls to share. Kids would hit and run to first, then would have to give the helmet to the next hitter. Leaving them to run the bases without a hemet. Understood that we can bring our own helmets, but helmets should be made available to 4-6 six year olds.
It is very convenient to have so close to our home. It is easy to get to activities and games!
My child participated in 3/4 year old youth soccer in fall 2024, and that experience was a lot more enjoyable overall. At this age, I want my child to work on basic skill development (e.g. kicking the ball, avoiding use of hands) and how to be a good teammate. The whole experience seemed quite disorganized without clear expectations. When we played in the fall, we routinely put 3-4 kids on the field at a time so the kids could practice taking turns and get breaks as they needed it. This allowed the "game" to remain somewhat productive as the kids on the field were engaged. This spring, our coach threw everyone on the field at all times and the kids just ran on/off the field as they wished -- which isn't how I want my kid to learn to function. I am now undecided as to if we will give soccer another try through the YMCA or seek alternative opportunities.
Affordable and perfect for younger kids who haven't figured out what sport they really like.
Very organized, great coaches and refs
It's a great way for kids to learn the fundamentals and gives them an Opportunity to learn and try different sports without getting too costly. Your facility is gorgeous and has something for all skill levels in the gym. All your employees are friendly and always smiling and willing to assist. We've been members for a couple years but this will be our first year being members of the Gretna YMCA pool and we can't wait!
The Coach is amazing. He has definitely instilled the love of soccer and made it fun while teaching the basics.
Affordable and organized.
Great environment for learning
Soccer program was great for my kid.
It was pretty chaotic. Granted, it was 5 and 6 year olds playing soccer... the field was always wet, and pretty beat up. There wasn't a lot of guidance, different coaches had slightly different rules just all around chaotic.
4 and 5 yr old girls should not be playing against boys in sports but this happens to be soccer. Only if we have a coed team but the tra. We played lastsatqerwholdi g shoving and pushing girls to the ground. Only after1 girl pushed a boy back did the parents get upset. This was frustrating
The coach. Jacob Kelly.
I had expected that the teams would be coed, not that teams would be all boys and all girls who play against each other. Only one team we played was coed. The teams could have been mixed better to provide the intro/beginning level a more fair playing field.
Coaches, parents, and players were amazing
Fun for kids/parents/coaches
There were initial issues with finding enough coaches for basketball which had the potential to negatively affect some teams. I know managing teams and coaches is difficult but its at least something to consider figuring out how to improve and build a roster of coaches ahead of time.
Able to pick practice night so doesn't conflict
Sports Leagues & Outdoor Water Park
Why can't all games be played in Gretna? Why does GBYS/private groups use the public's tax-paid for facilities instead of the YMCA? Why aren't there more practice spaces available?
It's about fun and family and learning. I like that the refs do a quick pre-game meeting. I like the relaxed atmosphere. My kids aren't going to pro athletes- but they wanna taste a little of everything. The YMcA gives us that opportunity
Have less players on a team. We have done 4 different sessions now, and each kid only gets to play half the game because there are so many subs. This is kindergarten age so they don't have practices and this is the only time they get.
affordable and inclusive
First time for child to do basket and he is having a great time. Easy to sign up and get schedule information. Reasonable price for season.
communication or updates through a playerspace/mails about classes and cancellations. and my kids likes the YMCA & Sports
I love how you stay away from Wednesday nights and Sunday mornings for church activities. This is my son's first time trying out basketball, and Ryan Raess has been so patient with him but still that 'tough love'. It didn't surprise me, when I realized he was Coach Feeken's friend. SO thankful for his willingness to coach for the Y and to instill great habits in these kids. Thank you!
For the younger levels, actual instruction the first week or two on the rules of the game and drills for basic skills like dribbling or proper form when shooting. Our team jumped right into drills where kids took off dribbling down the court fast and our poor kiddo who it was his first time, was floundering. His confidence really suffered and we've had to try and teach him at home. Some kids already know but not all do so walking through the basics to level-set would be beneficial for all.
For the Gretna kids, can we please play the soccer games in Gretna? There are empty fields all over and we have to drive a half hour to get to the field.
For being a new facility, everything seems to be running smoothly! My kids are having fun and are learning the fundamentals of the actual sport and sportsmanship. We look forward to using the waterpark next summer!
There should have been a set number of teams/spots available for kids to play, instead of scrambling last minute to make teams. Also the times sent out for children's pictures were incorrect so not everyone was able to get pictures taken and take part in the team pictures. This was super disappointing for the kids and parents. We will sign up for soccer elsewhere next year. The facility was the only nice thing about soccer here.
Not sure, but, by not having the kids play Flag Football on a field with virtually no grass way out on 84th and center for a league based in Gretna would be a great start. What sense does that make? Why did we build multiple fields right outside the YMCA building just to drive all the way to 84th and L/Center? The field is littered with dog poop and is hard as a rock, multiple kids have had minor injuries because of it ie twisted ankles and scrapes for no reason other than playing on such a garbage and neglected field that is mowed maybe once every two weeks.
From the onset of this, my 1st, season with kids in the program there has been problems due to communication and terrible organization. 1st the threat to cut kids due to not having enough coaches. This, to an extent, I can somewhat understand, but try to tell kids that want to play that they can't because an organization like the YMCA can't coordinate a soccer season. Next, after volunteering to coach. I was given a roster for a boys team that had an older, girl on the team. Following this correction that the parent and myself had to bring up, I received a new player with no notice. Luckily I kept an eye on my roster and was able to incorporate the new player with minimal issues. The app the Y uses breeds its own confusion as during the 1st game I had 2 players come to the game saying they were on my team that I had again no idea of. Based on previous example I could not prove that this was an error on the parents part, so I played with 2 extra players, directly affecting the players on field time. Now, this past weekend was picture day. Initial email said individual pictures and team if entire group was there. So I got the whole team to come at the same time to the debacle of Sarpy YMCA parking and was told they will all be photoshopped into a team picture with no option otherwise. Then my daughter was unable to get her picture because the time posted on the email a day or 2 before picture day gave the wrong time frame. We also played a team that, as parents from the team proudly pointed out, have been playing together for 3 years. I'm excited kids are playing at that early of an age, but how does a team stay together for 3 years without preferential team picking of players? The officiating volunteers, yes I understand volunteers, have been all over the place with care for the sport and players. Coaches have had to call dead balls due to CLEAR out of bounds. Being told to wait til 10 minutes to substitute players because "that's the game rules" only to rush subs in when the opposing coach is allowed to sub after 5 minutes in. Needless to say I've learned a lot coaching this year, but will be moving to a different organization and will not be bringing my children back to a YMCA team sport.
Find coaches sooner so players can start playing and learning the sport they're playing preferably more than a week prior to the 1st game.
We chose Gretna YMCA instead of Papillion for youth volleyball this season. We didn't know that practices and games would not be at the YMCA. We have practice at a Millard elementary school and games at Gretna Elementary. It would have been way more convenient to just stick with Sarpy YMCA. Also, the girls in 1st and 2nd grade are just learning... and yet, our games are always cut short to get ready for the next game. We have not gotten to play three sets even when the other teams aren't even there yet to warm up. Just disappointing they can't get all of the time they deserve. Our coach is fantastic though, so absolutely no complaints about her... more just how the YMCA is running the league.
Coordinator communicates promptly and kindly. Have desired sports with the level of commitment I want.
Field conditions are probably the area to most improve. Several of the baseball, flag football, and soccer fields we've played on are not mowed or maintained for sporting events.
I have been a parent volunteer multiple times. My kid did not want me to coach again and I tried to respect her wishes. When no other parents volunteered we were told our girls would just be split up and on other teams. The communication to the coach that took on the job even though his kid is not on the team was that the girls wouldn't have a team and our money was going to be refunded. It is weird to me that there are two different stories being told. It doesn't represent to core values of the YMCA very well. As a parent who volunteers for everything to help allow my kids to play, it gets to a point where the level that is competing higher than can be coached by a parent volunteer that did not ever play the sport. How can helping them possibly the wrong way be good? I don't know how this gets fixed but why does it seem like all the other teams have coaches who know the sport? Are they previously made teams that use the Y league as a practice? That's what it seems like.
