I ve never been to s hillsborough aquatics program. Why would you ask me for my opinion?
My same daughters I brought to infant swim class just completed her lifeguard course at 16 years. Such a great program
For Pre school classes, there are way too many kids in one class, where one kid gets a less than 5 mins of actual learning and more time just sitting around. Also, depending on the instructor, some instructors don't teach, rather just drag them through the water. It would be great if classes were small and manageable and instructors were actually teaching. Based on less than 5 minutes of work, kids are assessed whether they move up or not. The high rating is for private classes as the instructor is great and there is actual noticeable progress.
Ed and all the teachers have been so helpful in our journey to get my three year-old swimming! We have been struggling to get him in the water, but Ed has gone out of his way to find solutions and accommodate our needs. I highly recommend to all of my friends with little ones!
Quality of the instructors - there is no focus on teaching right swimming technique. Instructors stand out of the pool and make kids do laps of the pool back and forth. Sometimes two instructors keep talking with each other the entire class while no focus on the kids.
I took 2 sets of sessions of intermediate swimming lessons this year. There were 2 inexperienced instructors for most of the classes. They didn't know how to run these sessions to enable me work towards fulfilling my goals. The instructors were distracted by each other, as 50% of the time was spent speaking between themselves. I had to solicit feedback after practicing strokes and about 50% of the time they will tell me to repeat it because they were not looking. The first 2 lessons of the Jan/Feb session were held by a lady called Rachel who was an excellent instructor. After her departure, Kiana and Nikai, took over and were clearly unqualified to teach the class. I previously took swim classes at the Piscataway YMCA that was taught by an experienced swim instructor at half the cost of what I have paid for classes at Hillsborough. Given the bad experience I have had, I would like to request for a partial refund. Thank you.
The young coaches are not very communicative with kids and family.
Instructors are great!
My son has made great progress quickly. He loves swim class at the Y!
I am happy with the instructors and the class itself. I am frustrated as no matter what level we sign up for there are families that clearly disregard what level their child is at. Stage 6 has kids who cannot swim in lane, belly flop instead of dive, do not have good stroke form. It takes away from those who actually moved up as instructed and are held back by families who just want to push their child ahead
Staff are super friendly and helpful, locker rooms are clean and spacious, lap lanes are often open and water is clear.
Well organized. Pool is properly maintained. Changing rooms are clean.
The instructors take their time with the students and they correct them when needed. The classes are organized and everyone is friendly.
The session was cancelled at the last moment due to construction work going on. I was refunded the session amount. I requested to pause the membership for this month as well, but that didn't happen. I have no use going to YMCA if not for the swim. So, I have to pay the membership fee for nothing this month.
i am given property guidance on membership details and support was not that great
Hillsborough YMCA is great facility and life guard training was good for my daughter. Highly recommend the facility and training
Too crowded/chaotic in the pool area, and seems like too many things going on at the same time. Half the lanes were crowded with a swim practice, lots of other kids spectating their teammates and screaming/yelling, while the other couple lanes seemed like they had way too many classes going on at the same time - I don't think it was possible for any of the swim students to actually hear their instructors giving them directions from outside the pool. I think the instructors should have been in the water with the kids at least.
No
Some of the coaches are really nice
I think the program is good. Need to make any change .
Too crowded
What I really like about the Hillsborough YMCA's toddler swim class is how friendly and patient the instructors are. They make the class fun and engaging while teaching important water safety skills. My son is becoming more confident in the water each week, and I love that it's also a great bonding experience for us. Another thing I really appreciate is that he's becoming more familiar with the YMCA overall, since he also attends school there. It helps him feel comfortable and secure in the environment, which makes transitions easier and builds his sense of routine and community.
so many classes to choose from
The coach(es) never went into the water, and did not correct the kids' strokes when apparently they were wrong. I only consider this as a practice opportunity for my kid. I would not recommend it to others unless they only want to practice instead of learning how to swim.
There is too little time for individual child - instructor contact. While one participant practices strokes with the instructor, the rest of the group does nothing. Reorganization, with the help of an assistant or technology, is needed.
Well organized staff
The first class was disorganized. The teacher didn't introduce herself or say what class she was teaching. She just started working with a child so I went over and asked what class it was. There were 7 children in the class so my child only got 3 times with the teacher during the entire class. I don't think she will learn much with only one turn per stroke. I'm hopeful that the next class will go better.
Great stuff, clean and friendly environment !!
Very good
Responsive and efficient
To many kids in single lane. Not enough space to swim. No fixed instructor Instructor is not serious No sign of improvement
They are open to providing make up classes. They listen to the child's needs. The coaches are kind and they work at the kid's pacd
We are doing the swimming lessons on Saturdays with our 18 month old son Logan and it couldn't be any better. The facility is amazing the instruction unparalleled, and the experience is the highlight of our entire week. There's nothing more important than spending time with your family and teaching your baby how to swim. We are so happy we found the Hillsborough YMCA's children swim. Sincerely Dr Joseph and Tracy Martins
Great Experience!
I love how patient and knowledgeable the instructor is. My son feel comfortable ans safe in the pool.
I think the group size of Pre-comp swimming is too big. 12 students are crammed into one lane. They get to do atmost 3-4 proper laps coz. they are mostly waiting for all to finish. There shouldn't be more than 5-6 students in one lane. That gives them proper time to practice.
The lessons were fine. There wasn't a steady teacher so it was real hit or miss. Also the instructor could have been more engaging and connect with the kids. Just standing outside of the pool telling them what to do is not really that effective for stroke improvement.
Instructors are great with my 3 kids. They enjoy going to their lessons. The director has been very helpful with scheduling. We're very happy with our experience here!
Facility is good
Masters Swim, Lifeguards, lessons
Hi - I did not find much attention from the swim leaders. Essentially - I haven't seen them doing a lot of effort if kid is not doing something right. It feels more like an exercise session than learn.
Sorry, but it feels like that instructors are not pushing the kids to improvise. There are 7-8 kids in a batch and hence during the 45 min timeframe each kid gets no more than 5min to practice. In that 5 min if instructor does not even make them improve their confidence, form and does not guide them or motivate them, it will take years before the kids can even learn basic swimming. So basically I am paying $140 for total 20min of swim lessons without seeing any improvements. When my daughter requests free swim after the classes in the kids pool which is usually empty someone asks her to not use the pool after the lessons. Totally unfair.
I go to the adult beginners class. To my utter disappointment, there is no one-dedicated instructor for this class. Every week with the new face, we see, none of them comes inside water. Most of them just sit there at the pool side, except one kid this week who actually got engaged and instructed us properly from outside water. We paid a significant amount for this class and it feels like this is a self-learning class.
they should ask instructors to put more keen attention on students and teach the techniques for swimming. The instructors are frequently get changed which is not helpful for kids to build repo.
I love ymca swim program. One recommendation is to have the swim instructor continuous for a program / stage. Sometimes, there are different instructors teaching different week for the same program which is touch for the kids to have continuity.
Program time was shorter than expected time in some of the classes with replacement teachers
HI. Its great that my son is swimming but he's not learning anything. There's always someone who should be in a lower group slowing the practice down. I'm new to this, so maybe he's just in the wrong type of class. Call me! thanks
The trainer do not make effort or are in pool training kids. It looks more like practice session
The instructors are focused on set routines irrespective of the child. However, they need to review every swimmer's strengths and weaknesses notify parents about their progress and improvement, and notify them about the next steps. I think this is feedback for the program rather than individual instructors. Because the instructors are in a set routine, they feel distracted sometimes.
Professional instructors .
