In my experience, the Y has a wide array of opportunities for members to allow for better health in areas of interest.
Time is precious....Most of the male members in the fitness center are more interested in staring at their cell phone screens -- or being seen staring at their cell phone screens, while sitting on, or standing at the weight equipment, rather than using it. It's intimidating. Consequently, it causes other paying members, double the time -- or more, to complete their workouts, if at all.
More morning classes for adults I.e. tai chi, water coloring, etc
I love the classes!
It depends on what you're looking for. The price is good and included the indoor pools where available. The classes are great but can be hard to get into. The gyms are fairly well equipped but small and crowded. The etiquette of the patrons is not great. It's particularly frustrating that people feel no shame reserving two or three pieces of equipment at a time during busy hours, or stay on one machine or rack for the better part of an hour. Often there are multiple personal training sessions going on at busy times too, each hogging and hoarding equipment.
Variety of offerings.
The center is a lively place with lots of people coming and going.i like how the weight room eqt is organized. Taking my first class in years. Instructor encourages students and meets them where they are.
Very friendly and welcoming to all ages, just a great vibe
My kiddo likes the camp fine. Wish there was a bit more outside time and that kids that were friends could be in same group in consecutive weeks.
Too small space and too many people (especially in the weight room). People occupying/taking up the space/bench with their personal stuff so as to prevent others from using the equipment but no one is there. If I'm trying to use the equipment, some others around the equipment say "someone is using it." Then that someone comes back like 10~15 minutes later. There's no sign regulating such behaviors. Also, always some equipment/accessories missing in the weight room, like ropes, handles, or weight clamps. I need to bring my own always.
Convenient, lovely helpful employees and great classes.
Nice faculty. Good range of group exercise classes
Excellent facility and staff.
Office personnel and camp counselors
We unfortunately had a pretty bad experience. The directors were very kind but mishaps with staff changing room policies, pick up coordination, and my daughter saying she spent the whole day by herself, led me to pulling her from the camp. It’s too bad, but I would not sign up for this camp or recommend it to anyone.
We are having a great experience so far. Our son is becoming more confident in the water and comes home every day with a fantastic report on his day. The staff has been really helpful and communicative, and we feel like he is in great hands.
great staff
Great experience. Always clean.
Having more bikes and machines would help. There is always a wait and I have left in frustration. Also the no cell phone rule is never enforced and people talk loudly on their phones while sitting on the machines.
Lastly (as a senior myself) it seems somewhat discriminating to charge seniors more than anyone else because they are seniors and single when they are on a fixed income. Also I just returned from having to take some time off to find my bill now has gone up to $48 a month from $45. If I were part of a couple or a family plan there would.be a special plan with a lesser charge...this doesn't seem quite right.
Nothing
Amazing two week free trial
Wide range of classes, clean and modern facility, lovely staff
My daughter has been coming here for the past several years and I think what it does best is give the kids a place to play, swim and enjoy the summer without a lot of structure.
The staff doesn’t notice people talking on their phones in the gym or people scrolling on their phones or children using equipment incorrectly. They sit behind the podium without paying attention. Members have to be the ones who speak up or no one will.
Make sure there is soap in the showers.
Add an evening or weekend cardio kickboxing class. Find a way to accommodate more people in Saturday morning classes, instead of focusing on specialty classes like boxing and TRX that can’t have too many people and are only appealing to a smaller segment of people.
I have two concerns that lower my ranking from a 10:
-- Not enough room to stretch
-- Glare from the overhead lights in the big room with the cycling and walking/running machines.
Great Staff, Facilities, Atmosphere!
Good amount of well-maintained equipment, ample operating hours, active community of users, affordable membership fee including subsidy from our Medicare Advsntage provider.
I enjoy the classes I have tried so far snf look forwsrd to taking more.
The Y is more than just a place to work out
Well run, family focused community organization
Great job overall! Would like to see subs in place when classes are cancelled (Mondays and Fridays almost never have anyone to fill in). Thanks!
Would like to see the gym open later than 9:00
I love the vibe of the people and the instructors are awesome
Is a lovely space, we use it a lot. Thanks!!
After numerous calls, emails, and attempts to find someone in person, we never received a reply about a children’s bday party. We purposely seek out children’s programming at the other Y locations now between that and feeling like our child was excluded (by the coach, not other children) during both soccer and mini allstars
I love everything about the Y, except for the difficulty getting into classes.
Community and caring staff
I wanted to join to take some classes and do some personal training and I was helped out by the young woman at the check in desk. I talked to her a couple of different days and she really helped me and explained a lot to me. Also I met with Bernadette and she couldn’t have been nicer to me an I look forward to working with her.
fun is had while gaining balance.
Parking is terrible and they are cutting classes down to 50 minutes. I have been a member of the Y for 10 years and these types of changes to the schedule make me want to find another gym. There is no good reason for this change.
The group clashes are great.
The machines are always clean and the staff is very friendly
Really great dumbbell and rack area. Exceptional cardio equipment too. My only issue is probably just peak time crowds in the weights area.
In order to accommodate weights crowds, I'd probably put another rack where the boxing bag is. Most people I see in the boxing bag area are just doing hex bar deadlifts anyway, or stretching.
Similarly I'd find out how to move folks stretching or warming up to non weight areas during peak times -- maybe make mats and small weights available in the class room off the weights area when there's no class happening. That way that space gets more use and the turf and weights people have more room for dumbbell / kettlebell exercises
Thank you to the whole team for running my favorite gym I've ever gone to!!
I’d like to see more early morning and evening classes that are on offer during the day to accommodate folks who work outside of Melrose in 9-5 jobs,
The instructors have all been super sweet, however i think the classes don't focus on pool safety with the kids and every class seems to be the same thing
its a great facility. i would only say that the re is no place for actual stretching on your own without being problematic for other people. (and the pool could be updated but i understand). The people are so nice and helpful. never change
The greatest swim program and highly successful program needed for younger children!
The swim program has a Great director Ruben who is so helpful and amazing kind caring worker who is very patient and supportive and helpful to all of the students in the classes . Ruben helped my daughter when she was in the younger swim classes and my daughter has really took a liking to him and so proud to show him her accomplishments. My daughter has came very far from not knowing how to swim, follow instructions and terrible at listening in class when she started (3yrs old) to being able to backstroke ,dive, better listener and she can swim the whole pool at 6 !!
Thank you Ruben and the the staff who have been kind and caring and patient and supportive with my daughter !
Best swim classes around !
Unfortunately, since Alex's departure I've been really disappointed with
