Friendly staff, nice gym that has everything you need!

Mark is a wonderful instructor and his functional fitness class is perfect for seniors.
He is knowledgeable, professional, friendly and has a great sense of humor.
I have had a number of teachers in the years I have taken classes at the Y and I would have to say Mark is the best and his class is the most beneficial.

It would be nice to see more care given to maintenance in the locker rooms and showers. Cleaning seems sometimes spotty. People who are in the classes are very nice. A little more timely communication about cancelled or changed classes would be appreciated. Sometimes notifications arrive after we arrive at the Y.

Have the staff set up and take down the pickleball nets. Allow more gym times in the summer for pickleball.

Newly renovated and clean facility. Staff and instructors are pleasant and highly qualified.

My daughter loves her gymnastics coaches. They challenge her, but are kind and supportive.

I love the YMCA but the cleanliness has really gone downhill. The women’s locker room needs a regular deep clean, especially the showers, and the pool is frankly disgusting. The weight room and machines are ok but the rest could really use some attention.

Not enough equipment. It needs more of each machine. Most of the cardio machines do not connect to AirPods. No natural light.

Pool schedule is frequently not updated and inaccurate on the website. My husband and I have complained about this numerous times. Also, teenagers in the weight room are disrespectful of the equipment and the employees in the weight room do not care and do not ask them to be more considerate with the machines. The Y employees in the weight room should be showing these kids how to use the machines correctly and not slamming the weights down on the machines. Also, parking is very much an issue since the back parking lot has been closed for summer. I often see employees parking in the crowded parking lot while we have to park down the street because the lot is full. Employees should be parking on the street to allow more gym members to be able to park in the lot.

This is the lowest number I have ever given. I love the instructors I have in aqua Zumba and chair yoga. They are providing quality programs. However, recent problems with ac in our scheduled class location, having chairs and weights readily available have been frustrating. One of the long term pool lifeguards is often rude to class participants. For these reasons I would find it difficult to encourage acquaintances to join the Y.

The staff are extrememly nice and helpful. I enjoy going to various classes and learning new skills.

I don't always think that the YMCA plans for possible situations. For example, during the summer it is difficult to find a parking spot in the main parking lot. This might be lessened if a drop off area for campers was designated. One year cones were set up for parents to drop off their children right in front of the YMCA. This situation will happen once the preschoolers come to the YMCA. Will there be desigated parking for the teaching staff? In addition, while the new roof was being installed, debris was falling into the pool. This was not safe or appealing to members and arrangements should have been made to hold the water exercise classes at a different location during that time.

In addition, the women's locker room could be a bit more clean. There is mold on a few of the shower curtains and the floors need a deep clean. The locker room cleaning has improved, but members were bringing in their own supplies to clean the locker room due to the extreme dirtiness of the locker room.

Will the YMCA accept the Silver Sneakers program etc...? Many other facilities accept this type of program.

Have disinfecting wipes in the weight room.

The date I went to exercise, the room with the exercise machines, treadmill did not have packaged anti- bacterial wipes for before and after cleaning of equipment; instead was large roll paper towel to rip off and giant spray bottle, labeled oddly, wasn't sure if supposed to use on machines. There was no one at the desk for the 45 minutes except for last 5-8 min. And was preoccupied with acquiring new members on the computer. I don't see how there is any employee guiding or helping set up machines to your size for sitting, or monitoring the use.

You consistently cancel classes and room away the spinning program. It’s very disappointing and difficult to maintain good health at this y.

Unfortunately, there are too many cancellation of classes and Pickleball. As it is, there aren’t many classes in timeframe that I am available for.. prefer daytime not evening. And the instructors seem to cancel very last minute, which is annoying because you have already arrived at the facility..

The women's locker room floor is filthy. I am concerned that when the preschool opens, parking will be a problem. Their staff should be prohibited from parking in the lot. Many y members are seniors and should be able to park in the lot. We have already given up so much space, making group classes difficult.

The staff is very courteous and helpful.

Summer Camp is horrible

The Bathroom facilities are old. When the Somerville YMCA closed for renovations all of 2025 and "re-opened" in January 2026, there was no consideration to update the ladies bathroom by the entrance. The toilet flushing mechanism button is extremely difficult to push, so people cannot flush, and there is only a sink, no countertop to put any belongings on. Bathroom facility is not ADA compliant and is not helpful for seniors.
The 2 small rooms for exercise classes have hard vinyl floors with no amount of padding. So a person can get shin splints after doing jumping jacks or even marching during an adult exercise class. The mats for floor exercises are ratty and falling apart.
Shameful!! The Somerville YMCA received $5 Million from NJ to update the building for kids and the Y only cared about the kids' day classrooms. The YMCA did not think about spending even a small $ amount to update a little for long time (paying) Members!

Stop raising the price every year

The regular Y members seem to be forgotten and ignored. We are down to only 1 room to hold exercise classes in and the room is often crowded. Yesterday there were children's backpacks lined up against the largest wall. We use the walls for exercise classes. Why was this allowed? Why wasn't the children's stuff put in the sauna formerly known as room 6? Why are there never enough chairs at the beginning of classes which require chairs? Why is the A/C in room 6 and that hallway still not functioning? Why can't we have classes in the gym where we wouldn't be on top of each other and we would be comfortable? This is inexcusable.
It is abundantly clear that your priority is the camp since you make more money on them than you do on regular memberships. You need to remember camp will end soon; we members (if we don't resign out of frustration) will remain.
