I love the program for kids so i would definitely recommend it to other parents.
I love that everyone is respectful and helpful. They are very motivating and uplifting my children love it. They feel safe there and they have honestly been asking to come here rather than go to the outside basketball courts so thank you guys for being who you are and being available to so many people adults and children that need you. Stay amazing and smile because you all deserve to.
Traditional camp offers no planned activities for children throughout the day besides swimming. Child complains they spend the entire day outside doing nothing. When inside, they are sitting in the room also not doing much. Pickup takes at least 15 minutes. Will not return next summer.

Host more programs for fitness such as Zumba or dance related exercise classes for adults
Should up grades the equipments
The director of aquatics lied frequently after not communicating efficiently and clearly. She seemed happy to frustrate me and vindictive. I would never want anyone to come in contact with her. Behnoosh Shebastari is her name and I feel badly for anyone she is in contact with.
Gymnastics and swimming programs are great. The fitness center is very nice too
I pay to only use the gym and it’s very poorly maintain. Outdated machines, small and hot, have to circle around for wipes and trash cans.
Girls bathrooms need more maintenance, they were dirty
I was thinking of rejoining the Y at Somerville after 6 yrs. layoff. I tried the weights. The facility is nice and clean but the equipment appears to have not been properly maintained. I tried out one barbell and noticed the sleeves were not rotating. Looking more closely, I noticed the bearings were all crudded up after years of neglect. These barbells have to be cleaned and oiled regularly. Also, some of the cable attachments have disappeared and the remaining cable attachments are worn out and need replacement. I'm asking myself why I should pay gym membership way more than the competition for weight training when the equipment has been neglected and the management doesn't seem to give a ****. I went into the kickboxing room and found that the boxing speed bag setup, which I used to attach my speed bag to is no longer there. I was really looking forward to that as that is how I warm up.My cardiologist wants me to start walking on a treadmill, which is part of why I am thinking of rejoining the Y. I haven't tried the treadmills yet but after seeing the condition of the weightlifting equipment, I wonder if they are in decent shape and safe.
It has everything - pool, weight room, cardio area, basketball, multi purpose rooms. And its in Somerville one of my favorite small towns in NJ.
Great team, great facilities, affordable, and community focused. Happy to be a member and grateful that the facility is in my neighborhood.
Friendly and helpful staff. Good class offerings.
The gym, locker rooms and pool are very outdated and in need of significant upgrades and refurbishment. The building is sweltering in the summer due to a lock of proper air conditioning. I major overhaul is long overdue.
My son obtained his lifeguarding certification at the YMCA in Somerville. He had a fantastic time and we were quite pleased with the program. I, personally, learned how to swim in the same pool many years ago.
I subscribe to YMCA ti go to the pool. It is extremely difficult to find some time at which lanes are opened. Lanes are aways taken by lessons or swim Teams. Even the Saturday morning now. Not convenient at all.
Finish with all your construction, updates, etc.
classes are regularly cancelled; the floors in the group ex rooms are concrete; no space for kids to hang out/be watched; the member space was sent to the basement
Very friendly
Even with the renovations the Somerville YMCA is run down in places. The girls locker room looks like it should be in a prison. The shower is very run down. They don’t have removable shower heads like in the women’s room. This makes it very difficult to shower a toddler. The shower curtains have rips that leave huge gaps in the middle of the curtain. There’s a shelf that’s in the middle of nowhere. It’s really sad seeing a community building with areas in that condition.
Great place to workout
I'm just happy here. I don't feel stressed or overwhelmed. I like the pool. I like the sauna. I like all of the machines.
Friendly staff great coaches
The weight room is small and cannot really accommodate the number of people who use it even at non-peak hours. There is some equipment "missing" that would make it even better, e.g. more lat pulldown and row machines, a hack squat machine, duplicate leg machines, etc. Pretty much more of everything is needed. It is basically unusable at peak hours especially with the crowds of teenagers around. Other than that the pool and cardio equipment seem fine, and the classes offered are fine. I don't really make use of them though.
You sold the rights to the building to a preschool at the expense of the community and the membership. The facilities are crammed together now. Classes of 20+ are not permitted in the gym. The YMCA in Somerville has been seriously diminished because of greed and mismanagement of the overseers. This should have remained an active community center that serves the needs of town of Somerville and the Y Members before anything else.
You offer many group courses at convenient times. The instructors are very knowledgeable. The staff and particiapants are very nice.
Courteous staff; clean facilities; upgraded technology
I am very unhappy about the cleanliness of the showers in the women’s showers and locker rooms. How often are they cleaned and what do you use. Maybe you should have cleaning supplies available so we can clean ourselves,I’m
Also wondering about the Piscataway Y s members coming for free to the Sommer
Revile Y. Their membership is much cheaper them ours per month than our husband and wife membership. P is at away Senior membership is is $44 and ours is $90 . It doesn’t make sense that theirs is so much cheaper then ours and they can just come to our classes and not pay anything additional.
I like the choices that are offered. I do not like the increase on the membership especially for the seniors.
My daughter is in the gymnastics group there. Coaches are great she loves her class and the cameradie. If you have a young child who wants to explore and train, but might not be ready for a competitive environment…this is a great spot.
That said, there a plenty of seasoned athletes in the mix to observe or who assist w classes who offer motivation for the junior athletes. Love the Y Coach Rachel is the best!
His instructor is very patient. Daniel is very happy with him.
Broken equipment not repaired after reported to staff. Cramped shower stalls with moldy curtains and broken shower curtain hooks. Steam room permanently closed. Kids kneel and pray in the weight room, then in locker room use phones top take pictures and say **** and **** in casual tones.
Often when classes are canceled notifications come too late, and sometimes not at all. Cleanliness has improved, but still needs work .the group exercise rooms are entirely too small and inappropriate to hold classes.
Offers less nos. of exercises to choose from . Few good coaches. Rooms are not well maintained as to cleanliness and condusive to exercises.
Great location. Fantastic staff. Programs great.
Rooms to hold classes are much smaller and more difficult to get into
Staff are very helpful and friendly
Your facility has been cut in half due to the PreK, but the rates are the same? Will you also be running another summer camp this year & further crowd the facility? We no longer have regular access to the gym during the week.
As a longtime member of the Somerville Y, I was deeply disappointed when the ceiling in the pool came down on the aqua classes and despite saying something, it was still open for classes the next day. Finally after some bigger chunks of ceiling fell around the instructor, then they closed the pool.
Staff and classes are great. Enjoy the pool - there have been some issues during construction but for the most part I’m happy.
The community is great, the gymnastics program is like family, but the facilities are not kept clean. Even with recent updates, the bathrooms, ceiling in the gym, and stairwells are very unpleasant.
Please expand the space if possible, the gymnasium is tight now that they’ve expanded the floor for the gymnasts, the parents are having a hard time in the waiting area it’s very crowded.
Provide a fan or two in Room 6 for exercise classes. Even with the shade on the window, the room gets quite warm and it's not even summer!
Clean work out environment
The locker room cleanliness has gone downhill. Shower curtains need to be replaced more often. It was a little terrifying when parts of the pool ceiling fell and they didn’t immediately call people out of the water. However the people I attend classes with are lovely and friendly. I feel like Somerville is the poor stepchild of all the Y’s.
Like this YMCA/offers variety of classes/however parking can be an issue
Gym equipment is dated and there are too many young people who stay on machines and are either on their phone or hanging out
There are not enough instructors. And when one can not teach, there's not a substitute available. The class is just cancelled. And not enough different classes!!
YMCA Somerville is one of the best YMCA that i have come across. All the staff are so pleasant & the cleanliness is brilliant
