Overall satisfied, however there is slow progression within each class. Sometimes class sizes are large so each child does not get enough attention- which makes the short class pointless. Teachers are not all calibrated to do the same so have had better experiences in some sessions than in others.

Always a positive experience at the Y in Somerville.

The staff/trainers are continually rude and inconsiderate of other patrons. One trainer named Mark is at the facility almost every evening working out extremely loudly, grunting and yelling at full
volume, as well as singing. It is disruptive to everyone else in the space, however the staff at the desk don’t ask him to be more respectful. The staff is also frequently working out themselves, not near the desk or available if they are needed. Bathrooms are usually very dirty and often out of toilet paper or paper towels. some equipment is broken often too

Mens locker room and showers need work. I recognize the cost, but the facilities are very outdated

1) It would have been great if CIT had been offered as a one-week option for those who wanted to take other classes like gymnastics or cheer that are only available for a week.
2) The field trips were booked several weeks in advance, which is unusual for the past three to four years. It’s important to be able to register a week in advance because plans can change. It seems like there was a shift in how parents could cancel or reserve spots, as parents could now cancel instead of reserving a spot only if their child could attend.
3) The kids complained that this year’s activities were not well-planned. They were told to go and do something, but I’m not sure if this was always the case. In the past summer, the kids had not mentioned this issue.

Lacking in cleanliness

Love the place and the classes but the place could use cleaning. The shower curtains are slimy, consider washing them with bleach and rehang them. Sweeping daily would be great!

I left my watch by the pool. I called as I was driving home and I couldn’t get through to a person. I drove back to the Y. It was gone. There was a man sitting there who said that he had seen it 20 minutes earlier if they had answered the phone, maybe they could’ve went in and got it before someone stole it. Big disappointment. It was the first time I was using my membership.

You didn’t disappoint I just live in Pennsylvania, so I am very unlikely to recommend the Somerville. Why even though I do live in Bridgewater so I could recommend the Y to my Bridgewater friends so I will change my answer.

Honestly, I thought there would be more scheduled activities—that she would actually have swimming lessons—but they haven't even explained how to swim to her, and in fact, she doesn't want to go anymore. It’s like paying for daycare, which wasn't really what I was looking for; I wanted a place where she would learn and have fun at the same time. It’s a fine place for them to spend the day, but the parents should be told beforehand that there are no swimming lessons—that it’s just about spending the day there and the kids need to bring their own things to have fun.

The programs are good. However - The showers and locker rooms are rarely cleaned.

Staff is great. Maintenance should inspect men's shower and weight room every few days (e.g. leaky shower heads). Friday Functional Fitness class seems like second class citizens. The instructor Mark is great but lately not enough chairs for the attendees. Based on number of attendees please consider moving this to th gym from noon to 1 PM when the kids camp is over. AC in room #6 has been down for a long time. Maybe rent floor units until the AC is fixed? Thanks for asking.

I would recommend checking out the Y because it is very affordable and offers a wide variety of activities and exercises. The staff is friendly and the swimming pool is warm and clean.

I thought the pickleball court in the basement was poorly lighted and honestly subpar.

Friendly staff, nice gym that has everything you need!

Mark is a wonderful instructor and his functional fitness class is perfect for seniors.
He is knowledgeable, professional, friendly and has a great sense of humor.
I have had a number of teachers in the years I have taken classes at the Y and I would have to say Mark is the best and his class is the most beneficial.

It would be nice to see more care given to maintenance in the locker rooms and showers. Cleaning seems sometimes spotty. People who are in the classes are very nice. A little more timely communication about cancelled or changed classes would be appreciated. Sometimes notifications arrive after we arrive at the Y.

Have the staff set up and take down the pickleball nets. Allow more gym times in the summer for pickleball.

Newly renovated and clean facility. Staff and instructors are pleasant and highly qualified.

My daughter loves her gymnastics coaches. They challenge her, but are kind and supportive.

I love the YMCA but the cleanliness has really gone downhill. The women’s locker room needs a regular deep clean, especially the showers, and the pool is frankly disgusting. The weight room and machines are ok but the rest could really use some attention.

Not enough equipment. It needs more of each machine. Most of the cardio machines do not connect to AirPods. No natural light.

Pool schedule is frequently not updated and inaccurate on the website. My husband and I have complained about this numerous times. Also, teenagers in the weight room are disrespectful of the equipment and the employees in the weight room do not care and do not ask them to be more considerate with the machines. The Y employees in the weight room should be showing these kids how to use the machines correctly and not slamming the weights down on the machines. Also, parking is very much an issue since the back parking lot has been closed for summer. I often see employees parking in the crowded parking lot while we have to park down the street because the lot is full. Employees should be parking on the street to allow more gym members to be able to park in the lot.

This is the lowest number I have ever given. I love the instructors I have in aqua Zumba and chair yoga. They are providing quality programs. However, recent problems with ac in our scheduled class location, having chairs and weights readily available have been frustrating. One of the long term pool lifeguards is often rude to class participants. For these reasons I would find it difficult to encourage acquaintances to join the Y.

The staff are extrememly nice and helpful. I enjoy going to various classes and learning new skills.

I don't always think that the YMCA plans for possible situations. For example, during the summer it is difficult to find a parking spot in the main parking lot. This might be lessened if a drop off area for campers was designated. One year cones were set up for parents to drop off their children right in front of the YMCA. This situation will happen once the preschoolers come to the YMCA. Will there be desigated parking for the teaching staff? In addition, while the new roof was being installed, debris was falling into the pool. This was not safe or appealing to members and arrangements should have been made to hold the water exercise classes at a different location during that time.

In addition, the women's locker room could be a bit more clean. There is mold on a few of the shower curtains and the floors need a deep clean. The locker room cleaning has improved, but members were bringing in their own supplies to clean the locker room due to the extreme dirtiness of the locker room.

Will the YMCA accept the Silver Sneakers program etc...? Many other facilities accept this type of program.

Have disinfecting wipes in the weight room.

The date I went to exercise, the room with the exercise machines, treadmill did not have packaged anti- bacterial wipes for before and after cleaning of equipment; instead was large roll paper towel to rip off and giant spray bottle, labeled oddly, wasn't sure if supposed to use on machines. There was no one at the desk for the 45 minutes except for last 5-8 min. And was preoccupied with acquiring new members on the computer. I don't see how there is any employee guiding or helping set up machines to your size for sitting, or monitoring the use.

You consistently cancel classes and room away the spinning program. It’s very disappointing and difficult to maintain good health at this y.

Unfortunately, there are too many cancellation of classes and Pickleball. As it is, there aren’t many classes in timeframe that I am available for.. prefer daytime not evening. And the instructors seem to cancel very last minute, which is annoying because you have already arrived at the facility..

The women's locker room floor is filthy. I am concerned that when the preschool opens, parking will be a problem. Their staff should be prohibited from parking in the lot. Many y members are seniors and should be able to park in the lot. We have already given up so much space, making group classes difficult.

The staff is very courteous and helpful.

Summer Camp is horrible

The Bathroom facilities are old. When the Somerville YMCA closed for renovations all of 2025 and "re-opened" in January 2026, there was no consideration to update the ladies bathroom by the entrance. The toilet flushing mechanism button is extremely difficult to push, so people cannot flush, and there is only a sink, no countertop to put any belongings on. Bathroom facility is not ADA compliant and is not helpful for seniors.
The 2 small rooms for exercise classes have hard vinyl floors with no amount of padding. So a person can get shin splints after doing jumping jacks or even marching during an adult exercise class. The mats for floor exercises are ratty and falling apart.
Shameful!! The Somerville YMCA received $5 Million from NJ to update the building for kids and the Y only cared about the kids' day classrooms. The YMCA did not think about spending even a small $ amount to update a little for long time (paying) Members!

The regular Y members seem to be forgotten and ignored. We are down to only 1 room to hold exercise classes in and the room is often crowded. Yesterday there were children's backpacks lined up against the largest wall. We use the walls for exercise classes. Why was this allowed? Why wasn't the children's stuff put in the sauna formerly known as room 6? Why are there never enough chairs at the beginning of classes which require chairs? Why is the A/C in room 6 and that hallway still not functioning? Why can't we have classes in the gym where we wouldn't be on top of each other and we would be comfortable? This is inexcusable.
It is abundantly clear that your priority is the camp since you make more money on them than you do on regular memberships. You need to remember camp will end soon; we members (if we don't resign out of frustration) will remain.

Very difficult for kids of young age as there wasn’t much organization or structure; felt very chaotic at drop off and he voiced that this was the same feeling throughout the day which is what my 9 year old voiced as well. My 5 year old was nervous to go everyday and said the locker room really stressed him out because the kids were misbehaved and the counselors couldn’t control them. I kept him home one of the days as he was really stressed out. Also was very disappointed in the showing of movies 3 out of the 5 days with multiple movies being shown on two of those days. I pay to send my kids to camp in order to keep them away from screens. My 9 year old said she even told them she doesn’t like movies and would prefer to be able to play a game quietly but she was told they must watch the movie. I ended up sending her with some card games for the last day to give her something to do other than watching movies. Unfortunately, I feel like the price and quality of the camp did not match and will not send my two kids back.

Charging more while taking away more. No more spin classes, smaller group exercise room...I don't blame Somerville, I blame upper management.

Very little group exercise classes. No spinning classes. Gym equipment outdated. Men's showers are not cleaned regularly.

The Y is great but unfortunately the new classrooms are small and parking too is an issue. The trainers and instructors are excellent however.

As a swimmer I would recommend Somerset hills or bridgewater which are in the same family over somerville, the facilities are much nicer than Somerville and not much further in distance.
