I find the course expensive for the 20 minutes of actual instructional time you get out of the half hour. First 5 min is taking attendance after already signing in at a table elsewhere. Then more time for showers. Plus you're crossing over with other sessions ending/commencing. It is such chaos, so many groups at once. Also 8 kids to 1 instructor while in deep end is unacceptable. When they are only 6-8 year olds. I've watched my children struggle and take in water because the instructor is busy with another. It's honestly too busy for such a small pool and can only use the universal change rooms which I do not like. The way the sign in and out is, makes things more challenging and praying no one knocks you into the pool.
The aquatic programs are great for children and adults alike. The facility is clean and well organized. The staff are well trained and courteous.
My son is registered in Parent and Tot. Anna is our instructor, and the level of instruction has been declining every week. This past week we had Briar full in and had an amazing class. It was interactive, lots of songs and instruction. A night and day difference from the previous week. My daughter is registered in floater/glider (?) and from what I can see I am very happy with the class.
Thank you for the opportunity to share feedback about our swim lessons. I really appreciate the program and the staff's efforts. I've noticed that our regular Saturday instructor tends to be quite quiet and not as outwardly encouraging during lessons. We recently had a substitute instructor this past Saturday, and there was a very noticeable difference in their teaching style, she even talked to us about water safety… the substitute was much more engaging and interactive, which made the lesson feel more motivating and enjoyable. I know it must be hard to teach babies toddlers but our regular instructor doesn't really seem to enjoy it?..
When my young child was struggling to do a certain maneuver, and was in a state of fear and panic, the swimming instructor (I'm not sure of her name) was initially patient with my child, but then appeared to become increasingly frustrated--I noticed an eyeroll directed at another helper while they were struggling to get my child to comply. A child should never be forced or coerced to put their head under water when they are upset. If I had not gone over to my child to address the situation, I worried that the instructor would have dunked them without their permission, creating a traumatic experience for my child. Another time, the team lead, Jackie was so patient with my child, and was the perfect model of encouragement. Also we really appreciate the volunteer, I think her name is Roo. She has been always positive and encouraging with my kids, making sure they are empowered to be brave when they are scared. The instructor Jen is fantastic with little kids, and is just incredible keeping all the little ones safe and happy. On the whole, we've had a great experience, but one terrible experience is enough to overshadow all the good if my child becomes terrified of swimming lessons from being forced to do something they don't feel safe to do. Thankfully, I was able to intervene before anything like that happened.
Good variety of activities/programs and times.
It's a nice and well organized place.
They are very nice and helpful.
Just wish there was more times available for star classes and they had fewer kids in each class. If they had the same number as the otter and seal class that would be great for the kids trying to learn
more than a day for registration for classes if possible.
I feel like the st Thomas Y needs a complete upgrade the pool is always broken down and not a lot of kid activities to make the membership with it. If st thomas had another aquatic centre the st thomas Y would really have to step up there game .
Cost
Organized, great communication, timely, all the staff are amazing!!!
More experienced instructor. My son has been doing less in this 3rd level and round of swim lessons than he did the first level. The instructor is clearly not experienced and not a leader and honestly has been a waste of time this round and frustrating to watch. The first 2 instructors were amazing and very good at their job, it would be nice to see the name of the instructor when signing up so you can choose accordingly
Off the top of my head: New shower heads in the change rooms and a bathing suit spinner in all change rooms.
The pool deck needs a good power wash. The swimming lessons class size is too large for the amount of time, only leave each kid with only 1-2 chances to practice with instructor.
Excellent instructors, large pool, friendly
The staff went above and beyond to fit our 4 kiddos into swim lessons as soon as possible, and made sure that my older kids who cant swim were in a class and being taught with a older group which gives them the dignity and respect they needed compared to if we had put the older teens into a young kid class. They are thriving and my oldest asd girl is actually trying which is huge! Water safety is so important and they have done so much to help. We LOVE the coaches. They actually make everyone participate and work on swimming techniques as opposed to just sitting around and talking or letting the kids rule the lessons. So worth the money and time spent to get them there every week. Very impressed.
It seems a little chaotic every week. I thought it would get more organized as the sessions progressed, but it hasn't. I feel too much focus is placed on children who are crying and not wanting to be there than the actual children who are listening and ready to learn. For the little ones it makes me nervous when the tables are not against the wall and are in the middle of the pool. One week a girl was not paying attention and fell off the edge of the table and under the water. I do not blame the lifeguards/instructors as I believe they are just following what they are told to teach. They all seem to try their best :)
The program are amazing and the staff very friendly and professional
I like that you have partnered with the city so we can access swimming lessons even when we are not a member I like that you offer a variety of days and times for swim lessons.
Swimming lessons have many available time slots
My kid does swim lessons, they look informative and fun. The instructors are kind and knowledgeable, would recommend to any parent looking for lessons
Swimming option for the winter/fall/spring season when Jaycees pool is closed and affordable rate.
Instructors are very kind and patience.
My daughter enjoys the swimming lessons
instructors make pool time fun!
Longer sessions to allow more practice of the skills
My children take swim lessons there. They seem very disorganized, the psrenand tot class always seems to be doing things on a whim and the older class my son is in, his current instructor just seems like he hates life no enthusiasm to teach the kids at all. As for aquatics classes, i havent been but I saw one instructor Veronica and she was great. Seemed like reallu good energy in her class
Your staff is pleasant and super helpful.
Children have fun and the staff are great!
Instructors and lifeguards are always nice, lots of fun for the kids!
Not enough classes and the cost is ridiculous.
Lane swims should be limited to 30mins during busy times Children's aquatics sessions have many weeks between sessions, but no break in fees during that period Staff are wonderful, no notes. Thanks to Audri and Carter for making Gregory's ‘swimable' sessions so memorable ☺️
We like the swimming class
Swimming, summer swimming program was amazing.
I would like zumba class at the afternoonafter 5:30 pm
The Gym, swimming and activities for my kids
Great for kids! They really benefit from the swim lessons. As an adult my only dislike is how often either the sauna or stream room are broken but as long as one works I am happy lol
The problem is flow of people using the facilities during aquatics programs. It's not something you can improve – – it's old, cramped building design. Jampacked family, change room, narrow hallways, difficulty of movement due to large number of people occupying limited space.
The programs are well run and the instructors are great!
Awful experience. Would never recommend.
There is a lot of variation between instructors. Some are great and there is lots of swimming and practice time. Others seem to have a hard time organizing the class and time actually practicing swim skills seems limited when a lesson is only 30 minutes.
All swimming instructors are great in teaching and encouraging kids to do their best. They could do better, if they can give their 100% attention for each kid during lesson. Kids feel that if they are really given the correct amount of attention on their turn to do certain activity. As a parent I notice that they will asked kids to do something and instructors lost focus ( not even looking) in ensuring if that certain kid dd it right. This happens several times not only for my kids but other kids as well. Let each kid feel important. I believe this is vital in learning.
I wish the swim class had less students for 1 swim instructor so students could have more help and more practice time
Great instructors for aqua-fit and seated chair classes which I attend regularly.
The last time we did lessons, none of our kids passed primarily because of the first aid section. They weren't even taught it. (Star 3 and Star 5) Also, in the upper levels, 30 minutes is NOT enough time. Basically they spent the whole time swimming laps and I did not see one time that feedback was given on how to improve their strokes. Addionally, my children had finished half of Star 5 going into the lessons. At the end of the lessons, none of the sections they were missing were addressed, so the basically had the exact same report card as they did before. In the description for Star 5: Swimmers will also have the opportunity to continue to develop advanced aquatics skills by selecting from a range of options: advanced strokes, water polo, synchronized swimming, or aquatic fitness. NONE of this was done.
Every kids and adults participants are coached towards learning and improving their swimming skills. The staff are very attentive in providing a safe environment for all.
I love how the instructions are very nice and are happy in the water with the kids.
Waitlist Individual attention, the group is pretty big and some kids need more help than others, or direction where to improve
